WTFGDFIWS - why are some websites so dumb?

[Rant on]

You don't want to know what the code words in my blog title are...I'm really, um, upset.

Here is a screen shot why:

I had a great plan to visit a web site and blog about it. I got there, and two, um, freaking popup windows appeared, and wouldn't go away until I closed the Windows tab. To make matters worse, the smaller popup changed from a static picture to a short video every ten seconds or so. When I tried to click on either of the popups, the ad underneath the popup opened up. I couldn't make the popup windows go away! In the end, I just closed the tab and refuse to go back.

In the mean time:

* I wasted about five minutes trying to make the, um, %& things go away
* it sucked up some of my precious RAM, never to get it back until I reboot (?). It almost hit the max...the level is down now, about 300 mb below where it was.
* I didn't get to blog about what looked like an interesting site - it's their loss - %$#&* idiots!

There. I have to get it out somehow, you know! I feel better now.

[Rant off...]

I think I have all the words figured out except for the "I" - idiotic? Oh, yeah, there are some really vicious popups out there. Then there are the silly "talking" emoticons that show up ...

I know you're upset, Randy, but I did get a chuckle from your rant. Thanks!

I use Firefox with AdBlock Plus, and I haven't seen a popup ad in (literally) years. Some people think that AdBlock hurts small sites because the site owner can't get any revenue from ads that visitors don't see, and that's true enough. On the other hand, ads like the ones you saw are more than enough reason for me to use it. As long as ad companies keep trying to hijack my browsing experience with popups, I'm going to keep blocking them.

I hope this was good therapy because I certainly benefited from it and had a good chuckle.

Thanks and if it helps .. I feel your pain!

I also have Firefox with AdBlock Plus, and visited the same website and the pop-up still got through.

After a lot of trial and error, the way to remove the pop-up is apparently to click in an open area away from the ad. NOWHERE is that made clear or even hinted at!

'Tis a shame. I would have relished a review of their genealogy software reviews by someone as experienced as Randy.

It might not hurt to run some software such as Spybot Search & Destroy, SuperAntiSpyware or Malwarebytes.....or all of the above since no single program picks up everything. I hate pop-ups like those almost as much as I hate web pages that won't let you go back to the previous page (though holding down the shift key while clicking the "back" button sometimes does the job.)

After reading Kevin's post, I went to the site and did the same search, and also got the popup. However, if you're using Adblock Plus, you can just mouse over the ad, and in the bottom left of your screen (just above the START button), Firefox will display the link, in this case, to a site called reviversoft.com. If you then click on the AdBlock icon in the lower right (it looks like a stop sign with "ABP" inside), you can set your own filter. In the box, type *reviversoft.com* (the asterisks are wildcards) and click OK. The ad disappears and you'll never see another popup from them ever again.
