Best of the Genea-Blogs - 16 to 22 January 2011

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for the genealogy carnivals, or other meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

Tuesday's Tall Tales - On the run from the Czar by Cheryl Cayemberg on the Have You Seen My Roots? blog.  True family story or a tall tale?  Cheryl's trying to figure it out.  Good story!

Can I Turn My Love of Genealogy into a Career? by Lynn Palermo on The Armchair Genealogist blog.  Lynn wonders, asks questions...can you help her out?

Grandma for Sale: A Cautionary Tale and How to Sell Your Grandmother Guilt-Free
by Craig Manson on the Geneablogie blog.  There are lessons for writers and photographers here - genealogists beware!  Don't miss these articles!

Don't Let Yourself Be A Future Brickwall by Brenda Glover Leyndyke on the Journey to the Past blog.  Brenda is going to write about her own life...pretty good idea.  This post has some good ideas of subjects.

What’s in store for 2011? by Jess Moore on the FindMyPast Blog.  For those, like me, who haven't kept track of what English subscription sites did in 2010 and plan to do in 2011, here's a good summary.

Owed To My Mother  by Earline Hines Bradt on the Ancestral Notes blog.  Earline wrote a poem to commemorate her mother - it's a good one!

One Cannot Erase the History of One's Past by Angela Y. Walton-Raji on The African-Native American Genealogy Blog.  Some people try to ignore their history, but it always seems to come out, doesn't it?  I hope this case does too.

Have you tried Online Public Access? by Meredith D. on the NARAtions blog.  Meredith asks a good question - I haven't tried it yet either.  Have you?  Also some feedback from users here.

Those Ridiculous Deed Measurements by the writer of The Shy Genealogist blog.  TSG started like many of us ignoring pesky details, and now sees the light.  I'm looking forward to the handy tool mentioned...

3 Tips for a Successful Research Trip to the Cambridge Registry by Marian Pierre-Louis on the New England House Historian blog.  This post should help many New England researchers that haven't braved going to the courthouse in Cambridge, Mass.  Marian's photos showing the poor state of the records on Facebook were sad...

Several other genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts this week, including:

Follow Friday: Around the Blogosphere - January 21 by Susan Petersen on the Long Lost Relatives.net blog.

Friday Newsletter and Follow News: 21 January 2011  by Greta Koehl on Greta's Genealogy Bog blog.

Best Bytes for the Week of January 21, 2011 by Elizabeth Swaney O'Neal on the Little Bytes of Life blog.

I encourage you to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blog to your Favorites, Google Reader, RSS feed or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 760 genealogy bloggers using Google Reader, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
