Best of the Genea-Blogs - 2 January to 8 January 2011

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for the genealogy carnivals, or other meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

Everyone's getting organized by Pat Richley-Erickson on DearMYRTLE's Genealogy Blog.  Pat compiled a list of geneabloggers who are organizing their stuff.

Get A Rope - Shades Out West 2011 by footnoteMaven on the Shades of the Departed blog.  The December issue of this fantastic online genealogy magazine is out - about the wild, wild West.

Uncovering the Stories of Immigrant Ancestors by Leslie Albrecht Huber on The Journey Takers blog.   Leslie provides tips for writing stories about immigrant ancestors.

Carnival of Genealogy, 101st Edition by Jasia on the Creative Gene blog.  There are 43 entries in this carnival on the theme of Our genealogy research/writing plans for 2011!

New FamilySearch, a view from the British Isles Part One and Part Two by Audrey Collins on The Family Recorder blog.  Audrey raises issues with the revamped FamilySearch site, especially relating to British Isles research.

The #1 Thing That Impacted My Research in 2010 by Marian Pierre-Louis on the Roots and Rambles blog.  Marian learned some lessons in 2010, and shares them with us.  Well said.

The Earlybird Catches the Worm by the writer of the Geniaus blog.  She was one of 1,000 that caught Thomas MacEntee's webinar on Google - which started at 6 a.m. local time.  Then she posted one of the first summaries about it.

Build a BetterGEDCOM or learn GEDCOMBetter? by Louis Kessler on the Louis Kessler's Behold! Blog.  Louis has a different take on the pluses and minuses of GEDCOM.  Read the comments too.

Adapting Boy Scout Law To Your Genealogy by Carol Yates Wilkerson on the iPentimento | Genealogy and History blog.  Carol provides some guidelines for genealogists modeled on Boy Scout Law.  Nicely done!

Mama and Me and Papa and Me by Lucie LeBlanc Consentino on the Lucie's Legacy blog.  This is all about Lucie's parents and Lucie's interaction with them - fascinating and priceless.

Genealogy Industry Predictions for 2011 by Thomas MacEntee on the Geneabloggers blog.  "Genea-Dixon" makes genealogy predictions in many categories.

Genealogy Videos: Family History in 3 Minutes by Amy Coffin on the We Tree blog.  Amy demonstrates that making family history videos is useful and pretty easy.

Article in KC Star, 23 Nov 2010 by Kathleen Brandt on the a3Genealogy blog.  Kathleen shares this article featuring genea-blogger Kathleen from her local newspaper.  Excellent!

A Few Pieces of Advice for Beginner Genealogists by Valerie Craft on the Begin with Craft blog.  A nice piece that will help for beginning researchers.

Several other genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts this week, including:

While You (and I) Were Out  by Diane Haddad on The Genealogy Insider blog.

Donna’s Picks: January 7, 2011 by Donna Pointkouski on the What's Past is Prologue blog.

Follow Friday: Around the Blogosphere - January 7 by Susan Petersen on the Long Lost Relatives.net blog.

Friday Newsletter and Follow News: 7 January 2011 by Greta Koehl on Greta's Genealogy Bog blog.

I encourage you to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blog to your Favorites, Google Reader, RSS feed or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 740 genealogy bloggers using Google Reader, but I still miss quite a few it seems.

Thanks for the shout out, Randy, and for the time you also took to respond at length to Louis' blog posting.

I'm so, so sorry for not commenting sooner. It wasn't until I looked in my incoming links for the blog did I see you had included me in your list! Of course, I thank you and appreciate the recognition.
