Best of the Genea-Blogs - 4 to 10 December 2011

...
Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for the genealogy carnivals, or other meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

* Carnival of Genealogy, 112th Edition by Jasia on the Creative Gene blog. There are 16 entries in this carnival on the topic of An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving.

*  Tombstone Clues: What Did You Miss? by Kathleen Brandt on the a3genealogy blog.  Kathleen defines some of the fraternal organizations that you might find on tombstones.
Strategy for no data by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  James has wise advice for those thinking they have a brick wall ancestor.

* Getting Local with Research and Getting Local Before You Make the Trip by Marian Pierre-Louis on the Marian's Roots and Rambles blog. Marian discusses how she just has to find both historical documents and experience the places of her ancestors.

* Location! Location! Location! -- A Question Answered by Bart Brenner on the Stardust 'n' Roots blog. It's really simple when you understand the question...Bart shares his experiences.

What You Missed:  Ancestry Day, San Francisco by Kathryn M. Doyle on the California Genealogical Society and Library Blog.  Here's a summary from the sponsoring society's view, with links to blog posts.

The Family Tree You Can See by Susan Farrell Bankhead on Susan's Genealogy Blog.  This research trip story morphs into a Christmas gift suggestion.

Chasing Elusive Ancestors :: The Hazlett-Dunfee Connection and The Children of Sophia Hazlett and James Dunfee by Becky Wiseman on the kinexxions blog.  Becky is trying to sort out a big family, and doing an excellent job of it.  This isn't always easy!

Saturday Stars: Family History Scrapbooking for 10 Dec 2011 by Jennifer Shoer on The Scrappy genealogist blog.   Jennifer highlights a number of blog posts dealing with scrapbooking.

Several genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week, including:
* Monday Morning Mentions by Lynn Palermo on The Armchair Genealogist blog.

* Ruth's Recommendations by Ruth Blair on The Passionate Genealogist blog.

* Genealogy Round Up, December 8 by Megan Smolenyak on Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak's Roots World blog.

Follow Friday Gems - 12-09-11 by Deb Ruth on the Adventures in Genealogy blog.

Follow Friday: This Week’s Favorite Finds by Jen on the Climbing My Family Tree blog.  Check out her family pictures too.

*  * Week In Review by John Newmark on the TransylvanianDutch blog.

I encourage readers to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Google Reader, RSS feed or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1110 genealogy bloggers using Google Reader, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
