Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Make ONE Resolution/Goal for 2013

It's Saturday Night -
time for more Genealogy Fun!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible! music) is to:

1)  Did you make any New Years Resolutions, or state Goals and Objectives, for genealogy research in 2013?  If so, tell us about them.

2)  If not, then make ONE resolution, or state one goal, for your genealogy research that you are determined to keep during 2013.  We'll check on progress toward that resolution/goal during the year in SNGF.

3)  Tell us about it in your own blog post, in a comment to this blog post, or in a Facebook status post or Google+ Stream post.

Here's mine:

1)  I have NOT made resolutions or stated goals for 2013, based on my seemingly poor performance in recent years.

2)  The ONE, most important, Goal that I have for 2013 is to:  Get more information sitting in my piles, on my computer, and on my bookcases into my genealogy database, including narrative information, transcribing/abstracting documents, source citations for events, etc.

I have a wealth of information that needs to be added to my genealogy database to make it "better" by using authoritative references, transcribing/abstracting documents, and adding events with source citations as needed.  This is a seemingly endless task because I keep finding and saving (photocopies or digital files) information about my ancestral families in repositories (I get to so few these days) and online (there is so much to find!).

So, my GOAL is to burn down my "to be entered" pile from 18 inches to 6 inches, and to enter at least 6,000 new source citations in 2013.  I currently have 35,837 citations in my database.

3)  There!

Great idea, Randy. My #1 goal for genealogy is to start attacking my sources list and to 'fix' my messy citations, many of them done in those early days of my life in genealogy! I was rather giddy with finding, and absolutely sloppy about recording where I found what. Sigh. Cheers.

Randy, I also only made a goal of making the piles smaller of the data found long ago that I can enter into my genealogy based program of today. I have deleted a half box so far and added no idea how many more sources to the program. I would have room for a new desk if I can clear these Avon boxes of data out.

My main goal for this year is to finish gathering the information I need to complete my 3-4 generation family history for the SHAW family and submit it to NGS Family History Writing competition.

I was inspired by you and other bloggers to develop my own list of Genea-Goals. You can see it here: http://www.bnk.com/groupwgenealogy/2013/01/18/genea-goals-for-2013/

I have never been much on New Year's resolutions, but this year I thought of the perfect solution to the danger of making resolutions that one does not follow through on AND doing something to advance my increasing addiction to genealogy. The formula was simple: (1) make only two resolutions; and (2) make the resolutions discrete action items that can be accomplished and checked off as done easily and efficiently (meaning avoid things like "exercise at least three days every week in 2013").

And my path to success was . . .

RESOLUTION #1: "I will only make ONE action resolution for 2013."

RESOLUTION #2: "Start my own geneaology blog."

Late on New Year's Eve "Filiopietism Prism ("The Prism" for short)was born. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! :-)
