Best of the Genea-Blogs - 6 to 12 October 2013

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Ancestry Anne's Top Ten Rules for Growing Your Family Tree by Anne Gillespie Mitchell on the Ancestry.com Blog.  Anne has a great list here.

*  Can We Overcome the Great Genealogical Divide? by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  James works with genealogists who don't have technology skills, and those that do.  He describes the divide quite well.

*  My Reply to Ancestry Anne's Top Ten Rules for Growing Your Family Tree by Russ Worthington on the Family Tree Maker User blog.  Russ adds his own commentary on Anne's rules.

*  A Census of the Census and 9 Other Things I Tried by Diane Boumenot on the One Rhode Island Family blog.  Diane did a lot of correlation and analysis of records to try to narrow the candidates for her Andrews ancestor.

*  Ancestry.com Adds Related Content Pane to Image Viewer by the writer of The Ancestry Insider.  Ancestry keeps adding bells and whistles.  I like this one.

*  How to Handle Conflicting Evidence: A Six-Step Program by Harold Henderson on the Archives.com Expert Series blog.  Great advice here!

*  A Pauper's Tale by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy finds the most interesting court papers to show us the intricacies of these records.

*  Why Genealogy on TV is a Good Thing by Cyndi Howells on the Cyndi's List blog.  Yep, it is!

*  Did You See the San Francisco Episode of the GENEALOGY ROADSHOW? by Jean Wilcox Hibben on the Circlemending blog.  Yes, I did, and Jean talks about some of the behind the scenes activities in this post.

*  18 Ways to Find Someone's Marriage Information by Kenneth R. Marks on The Ancestor Hunt blog.  Ken has an excellent list here.

*  Expanding Our Audience by D. Joshua Taylor on the D. Joshua Taylor blog.  Josh describes his Genealogy Roadshow experience, plus his outreach to his friends who watched it with him.

*  Welcome to My Blog: Items in My Cemetery Kit by Midge Frazel on the Granite In My Blood blog.  Midge highlights her cemetery kit stuff.

*  10 Steps to Fix That Online Tree You Started by Caroline M. Pointer on the 4YourFamilyStory.com blog.  Caroline has excellent suggestions and advice here.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1400 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
