Best of the Genea-Blogs - 17 to 23 November 2013

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Reading the Book is Just the Beginning -- Do You Know how You Learn Best?  Using Mastering Genealogy Proof As An Example...Guest Post by Shannon Combs-Bennett on the Upfront With NGS blog.  Shannon has some excellent ideas on how to improve your learning skills.

*  False Friends by Kathleen Scarlett O'Hara Naylor on the You Are Where You Came From blog.  Interesting thoughts by Kathleen about family artifacts that might not be about your family.

*  5 Ways to Jumpstart Your Research by Robyn on the Reclaiming Kin blog.  I love blog posts like this!  Great suggestions and examples.

*  Why Genealogy Is Like Heroin by Debbie the Mascot Manor Genealogy blog.  Another addict confesses and discusses the good, bad and ugly sides of genealogical societies.

*  5th Edition Carnival of African American Genealogy (CoAAG) - REBIRTH: It's Time for Revival edited by Luckie Daniels on the Our Georgia Roots blog.  This Carnival has been reborn - ten excellent articles about African-American ancestors.

*  Amy's Story by Scott H. on the 23andMe Blog.  This is a fascinating story of an adoptee's search for her birth parents.

*  My Hunch About That Third Tombstone by Tammy Hepps on the Treelines blog.  Tammy listens to a friend, acts on her hunch about his ancestry, and writes a story on Treelines about it.  Click through to see The Amazing Ancestry of Abraham Phillips.

*  Copyright and the Genealogy Report by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy discusses the copyright status of work made for hire reports.

*  When Was the Last Time You Checked Primary Sources? by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  Um, years ago?  James makes the point that there is original source material lurking in local, state or national archives for your ancestors - you need to find it.

*  Mapping Detroit Ancestors by TK on the Before My Time blog.  This is a great idea to show where your ancestral families resided in a large city over a period of time.  City directories are really helpful for this.

These genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week:

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1400 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
