Best of the Genea-Blogs - 18 to 24 May 2014

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

* Ephemera: A Powerful Genealogy Research Tactic by Sharon Atkins on The In-Depth Genealogist blog.  Sharon shares information about her research project which included ephemera found in letters, photos, newspapers, periodicals, etc.

*  Tuesday's Tip: Summertime Genealogy by Miriam Robbins on the Ancestories: The Stories of My Ancestors blog.  Miriam suggests genealogy activities for this summer.

*  Visit to the Newberry Library by Taneya Koonce on Taneya's Genealogy Blog.  Taneya visited Chicago on business, and shares what she saw at the Newberry Library.  Check out the family tree.

*  10 Tips to Find Your Living Family Members by Duncan Kuehn on the GenealogyBank blog.  Finding living descendants of your ancestors is difficult sometimes - here are some ideas on doing it.

*  Find A Grave Engineering by Robert Schulz on the Ancestry.com Tech Roots blog .  This post describes how the Find A Grave mobile app was engineered and what they're doing for the website.  I loved the jargon!

*  52 Ancestors Challenge: Week 20 Recap by Amy Johnson Crow on the No Story Too Small blog.  There were 126 entries for this challenge in Week 20.

*  Where's William? and Oh Wow ... Oh Wow ... by Jacqi Stevens on the A Family Tapestry blog.  Jacqi analyzes her problem and comes to a conclusion about William's parents and birth date.  Then an inspiration...

*  Jamboree - Streamed Video Schedule Announced by Paul Johnson Hinkel on the Genealogy Jamboree Blog.  There are five sessions from the DNA day for a fee, and 14 sessions from the three Jamboree days for FREE!

*  Meeting Up With Dear Myrtle by Susan Petersen on the Long Lost Relatives.net blog.  Connected by mobiles, meeting for dinner, talking about genealogy...what geneabloggers do!

*  My Trip To Scotland -- What I Did Right and What I Did Wrong by Diane Gould Hall on the Michigan Family Trails blog.  Diane had a great time in Scotland on vacation, and managed to do some research too.

*  Cops & Robbers Issue by footnoteMaven on the Shades of the Departed blog.  fM has a new Shades of the Departed digital magazine available!!  Just WOW!  Beautiful.

These genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week:

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1520 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.

Randy, thanks for the double mention of posts on my blogging journey last week! I'm still awed by finding that document. Sometimes genealogy can become so tangible!

Best wishes to you this Memorial Day weekend!
