Amanuensis Monday - Post 244: 1875 Deed of Land in Taylor County, Iowa from Devier and Abbie Smith to Bazzel Turner

Genea-blogger John Newmark (who writes the excellent TransylvanianDutch blog) started a Monday blog theme years ago called "Amanuensis Monday."  John offers this definition for "amanuensis:"

"A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another."

The subject today is an 1875 deed in the Taylor County, Iowa deed books for Devier J. Smith and Abbie A. Smith selling land to Bazzel Turner:

The transcription of this deed is (handwritten text in italics, form fields underlined):

Devier J. Smith bought the entire 160 acres in Section 23 in Township 68 North Range 34 West from Tobias and Lydia Denny on 10 December 1867, along with 60.79 acres of land land in Section 18 lot 3 in Township 67 North of Range 33 West, for $1400.  He sold the Section 18 lot in 1871 for $1000.  He sold the North half of the southwest quarter of Section 23 in 1872 for $3200.  He sold parcels in the southwest quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 23 between 1871 and 1875 to at least 14 separate transactions for a total of $3,090.50.

The one transaction with the Dennys in 1867 cost $1,400, and he sold all of that land for a total of $7,290.50, for a gross profit of $5890.50.

Devier J. and Abby A. Smith are my second great-grandparents.  By 1875, they were residing in Concordia, Cloud County, Kansas.  Subsequently, they moved to McCook, Red Willow County, Nebraska in 1885, and then bought land in Cheyenne County, Kansas before Devier died in 1894 in McCook.  Abby came to San Diego to live with her daughter's family in the early 1890s.

I really think it is worth pointing out that this is one of those wonderful deeds where folks sold land in prior residence place, giving new residence location in the document.

Sometimes this is the only clue you get for disappearances, and makes looking for the records to account for every land holding all the more important.

Cheers!
