Best of the Genea-Blogs - 16 to 22 November 2014

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  When Aunt Mable's Genealogy is Wrong by Lee R. Drew on Lineagekeeper's Genealogy Blog.  Lee discusses how to deal with researchers whose information is wrong.

*  5 East Steps to Becoming a GREAT Newspaper Researcher by Kenneth R. Marks on The Ancestor Hunt blog.  Ken has excellent suggestions.

*  Tuesday's Tip -- Don't Rely on the Search Engine by Cheryl Cayemberg on the Have You Seen My Roots? blog.  Cheryl searched specific databases on Ancestry.com after her global search failed.

*  10 Online Genealogy Webinars You Should Be Attending by Mark Subel on the Crestleaf Blog.  Great list of online webinars for genealogy education.

*  Ancestry's Better Mousetrap -- DNA Circles by Roberta J. Estes on the DNAeXplained - Genetic Genealogy blog.  Roberta describes the new DNA Circles feature on AncestryDNA, and a new match that may solve a brick wall problem.

*  Goodbye False Positives! AncestryDNA Updates its Matching Algorithm by Blaine Bettinger on The Genetic Genealogist blog.   Blaine discusses the new features and the reasons for changing the AncestryDNA's matching algorithm.

*  More to Love About Crowdsourcing by Jacqi Stevens on A Family Tapestry blog.  Jacqi got help from several researchers in her quest for Tully and Flanagan ancestors.

*  What Happened to This Marriage? by Schalene Dagutis on the Tangled Roots and Trees blog.  Schalene describes records found for a couple in the 1930s and asks readers to guess what happened.

*  Building a Pedigree From Sources -- The Ultimate Challenge by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  Is this how we should start beginning researchers?  James makes a great point here.  How well does it work?

*  Review of "Writing Logical Proof Arguments" Course by Michael Hait by Patricia McIntyre on Angela McGhee's Adventures in Genealogy Education blog.  Patricia took this VIGR course and provides a helpful review.

*  What Can You Learn From a Probate Record? Here's One From 1884 for my 3rd Great-Grandmother by Diane Gould Hall on the Michigan Family Trails blog.  Diane details what she learned - this is a good thing to do.

These genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week:

*  Recommended Reads by Linda S. on the Empty Branches on the Family Tree blog.

*  Genealogy News and Blog Posts, November 21, 2014 by Michael J. Leclerc on the Mocavo Genealogy Blog.

*  Follow Friday ~ Fab Finds for November 21, 2014 by Jana Last on Jana's Genealogy and Family History Blog.

*  Genealogy News Corral: Nov. 17-21 by Diane Haddad on the Genealogy Insider blog.

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1540 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.

Sometimes, Randy, I don't know how you do it! There are so many great posts out there. Thanks for choosing to put mine right in the midst of them all. It's an honor.

Best wishes for a great Thanksgiving for you and yours this week!

As Jacqi said, I don't know how you do it either. But, we sure appreciate you. Thanks for mentioning my blog among all the other great reads this week.

Can you show us the klist of 1540, so we'll know what you are missing?

Israel, no I can't do it easily. I always figured if someone went back over the last year or so and looked at the list from each week, that is probably a pretty good list. For more variety, look at Jana Last's list too.

I do a yearly list also - the writers with the most posts on the list during the year. I'll do that again in early January.

It's actually a weeklong process. I start the post on Sunday, then add to it almost every time I checked my Feedly blog list. Then I clean it up on Sunday morning.

Rinse and do it again...
