Your mission this week, should you decide to accept it, is to:

1)
What day of the week was your Mother born? Tell us how you found out.

2) What has happened in recorded history on your Mother's birth date (day and month)? Tell us how you found out, and list five events.

3)  What famous people have been born on your Mother's birth date?  Tell us how you found out, and list five of them.

Getting Help From My Friends - More on the Morgan Surname Post

When I wrote Surname Saturday -- MORGAN (Wales > New Amsterdam > New Jersey) on 3 May 2014, I had very little information about this family line, but I had posted what I had.

I received an email from Howard Swain three days later, noting that he was unable to comment on the post for some reason, but he provided this information about the Morgan family:

"Here's some more on Charles Morgan [Sr].  He had two wives.  The first was, as you say, Helena Applegate.  They had marriage intentions 9 Feb. 1648.  He m/2 Catalyntje Huyberts from Haerlem with intentions 18 Dec. 1652.
"There are baptism records for 4 of his children.  17 July 1650 Thomas, 23 Aug. 1654 Jan/John, 21 Jan. 1657 Marie, and 20 July 1659 Rachel.  All marr. and bap. records above are from the New Amsterdam Reformed Dutch Church.
"In his will, Charles also names as children:  Charles, Daniel, and Susannah.  I haven't seen proof which wife was the mother of Charles [Jr.].  Although, I'd guess he was first born because he was named for his father and he is named first in the will.  There may be land records that might say if he is the eldest.
"Charles' will abstract is in the Abstracts of Wills pub. by the NY Historical Soc.  vol. 1, p. 9.  The complete will as recorded in the will liber is online at FamilySearch:
New York, Probate Records, 1629-1971 > New York Co. > Wills 1665-1683 vol 1, image #61.  (Film #907920 and page 66 in the orig. liber).  If you want the 19th C. copy of the above see Wills 1665-1699 vol 1-2, image #50.
"The original will itself has survived and is on film #501142, file #88.  I have not been able to find this film in a digital version online.
"As to the wives --
There is more on Helena in Historical and Genealogical Miscellany by Stillwell, vol. 3, pp. 1-4.  You can download a pdf of this from Internet Archive.
I doubt she is from Wales.
"Catherine m/2 Nicholas Stillwell.  See New York Marriages Previous to 1784, p. 373."

It's wonderful to have help like this from my genealogy friends and readers.

I went looking for the information online that Howard highlighted, for instance:

1)  Charles Morgan's 1668 probate records in New York County, New York.  As he suggested, an image of the original will and inventory is in the New York, Probate Records, 1629-1971 collection on FamilySearch.  Here is the image of the will:

2)  Baptism records for four of Charles Morgan's children in the 1650 to 1660 time period.  I found transcriptions of these records in Lorine McGinnis Schulze's Olive Tree Genealogy website - see http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/nn/church/rdcbapt.shtml.

I found a published book with transcriptions of these baptisms on AmericanAncestors.org - the citation provided is:

New York, NY: Parents and Witnesses at Baptisms in the Reformed Dutch Church, 1639-1730. (Online database. AmericanAncestors.org. New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2012.) Originally published as: Collections of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, Volume 2. Records of the Reformed Dutch Church in New Amsterdam and New York. Baptisms from 25 December, 1639 to 27 December, 1730. Edited by Thomas Greer Evans. New York: Printed for the Society, 1890.

3)  Marriage records for Charles Morgan and his two known wives - Helena Applegate in 1648 and Catalyntje Huyberts in 1652.  Lorine McGinnis Schulze has a marriages list also the 1648 entry is on http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/nn/church/rdcmarr1648.shtml.

I found a published book with transcriptions of these marriages on AmericanAncestors.org - the citation provided is to:

New York, NY: Marriages in the Reformed Dutch Church, 1639-1801. (Online database. AmericanAncestors.org. New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2012.) Originally published as: Collections of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, Volume 1. Records of the Reformed Dutch Church in New Amsterdam and New York. Marriages from 11 December, 1639 to 16 August, 1831. Edited, with an Introduction, by Samuel S. Purple, M.D. New York: Printed for the Society, 1890.

4)  The Stillwell work was found on Internet Archive (www.archive.org) at  https://archive.org/details/historicalgeneal03instiland on Ancestry.com in  http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=6248.

All of the above help me add content to my database for this Morgan family, and also provided more information about the parents of Helena Applegate, the probable mother of Charles Morgan (1649-1720).  I like the NEHGS source citations, too!

My thanks to Howard Swain for helping me out here on a surname line that I knew little about and had performed no real research on.

52 Ancestors Week 20: #27 Abigail A. (Vaux) Smith (1844-1931)

Amy Johnson Crow suggested a weekly blog theme of "52 Ancestors" in her blog post Challenge:  52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks on the No Story Too Small blog.  Here is my ancestor biography for week #20:

Abigail A. Vaux (1844-1931)  is #27 on my Ahnentafel List, and is my 2nd great-grandmother. She married #26 Devier James Lamphier Smith (1839-1894) in 1861.

I am descended through:

*  their daughter, #13, Abbie Ardell "Della" (Smith) Carringer (1862-1944), who married  #12 Henry Austin Carringer (1853-1946) in 1887.
*  their son, #6 Lyle Lawrence Carringer (1891-1976), who married #7 Emily Kemp Auble (1899-1977) in 1918.

* their daughter, #3 Betty Virginia Carringer (1919-2002), who married #2 Frederick Walton Seaver (1911-1983) in 1942.
*  their son, #1 Randall J. Seaver (1943-....)

To create this post, I made an Individual Summary report in RootsMagic 6, then saved it into an RTF file.  I then copied and pasted the Person, the Individual Fact List, the Marriages/Children, the General Notes, and the Source Citations into this blog post.  Unfortunately, the source citations superscripts did not survive this process as superscripts, so I put them in brackets in the lists and notes below, and without brackets in the Source Citation list.  I have images of many of these records, but have not included them in this blog post due to the length of the post.  Many of them have been transcribed or shown in Amanuensis Monday and Treasure Chest Thursday posts.

Dear Randy: How Do I Cite a Church Record on an FHL Microfilm?

Genea-Musings reader Sandy asked this question in a recent email.  She found a church record of a baptism on a Family History Library microfilm and wanted to know how a source citation might be crafted.

I have some records like this, so I used the question as an opportunity to add some sources citations to my database.

I used the RootsMagic 6 source template for "Church Records - FHL-GSU Microfilm" to craft this source citation.

Here is the blank Source Citation template form in RootsMagic 6:

The fields for user input, with suggested entry information, include:

Master Source fields:
*  Church (Author) -  the name of the church
*  Location - location of the church (shortened location name for short reference note)
*  Church with location - church name with location embedded
*  Record series - name of the series of records, and range of dates & name without dates (separated by double bars ||)
*  Record book - name of the record book, without the dates (used in reference notes)
*  Film ID - FHL film ID
*  Repository - owner/repository
*  Repository location - e.g., Edinburgh

Source details fields:

*  Volume code - e.g., OPR222/1
*  Page - page where information was found, and item number when applicable
*  Item of interest - Names, types of records, and date for unpaginated entries || shortened item description for short reference note
*  Item number - film item number

I did the best I could with the information I had from my notes and the information on the Family History Library Catalog for the St. John's episcopal Church in Elizabeth, New Jersey.  Here is the FHL Catalog page image with the record information:

I attempted to enter the right information in the right fields.  Here is the result:

Here are the source citations for the Footnote, Short Footnote and Bibliography from this source template:

Footnote: Florence Evelyn Pratt Youngs, "Records of St. John's Episcopal Church, Elizabeth, N.J. 1750-1873," no page number, Tabitha Randolph baptism entry, 1761; FHL microfilm US/CAN 1019522, Item 2.

Short Footnote: St. John's Episcopal Church (Elizabeth, N.J.), no page number.

Bibliography: Florence Evelyn Pratt Youngs. Holland Society of New York Church Record Collection, Vol. 089. Salt Lake City, Utah. FHL microfilm US/CAN 1019522. Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Footnote source citation looks great.

The Short Footnote lacks the Item of Interest information - the person, the record type and the year.  I think that should be included, especially if there is no page number.

The Bibliography information includes the repository and repository location, which I took to be where I got the information.  In this case, that is the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.  However, Salt Lake City appears twice in the Bibliography, so it may be better to leave the Repository and Repository location fields blank.  Perhaps the location should be New York City.

I kept the Repository field blank (since nothing was added to any of the citations), and added New York City to the Repository location field, and the Bibliography citation appears as:

Bibliography: Florence Evelyn Pratt Youngs. Holland Society of New York Church Record Collection; Vol. 089. New York City. FHL microfilm US/CAN 1019522. Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah.

I think that's sufficient.

Southern Orange County California Genealogical Society on Saturday, 17 May, Features ... Randy Seaver

I am speaking at the South Orange County, California, Genealogical Society (SOCCGS) on Saturday, 17 May in Mission Viejo, California, at the Mission Viejo Family History Center main building (corner of Hillcrest Drive and Marguerite Parkway).  The meeting starts at 10 a.m. with a business meeting.

The publicity for the meeting on the SOCCGS website says:

I look forward to seeing my genealogy friends at the SOCCGS meeting.  These meetings are always fun because I meet new people and new Genea-Musings readers, while trying to expand the genealogy education of their members.  Orange County has three very active and speaker-friendly genealogical societies, and they are within 100 miles of my home.

Did I mention that my daughter and her family live in Orange County now?  I'm not going to visit them this time because of time constraints, but I could and now we have a guest bedroom there.

I hope to see many more of my Genea-Musings readers at this event - come and beat the heat in an air conditioned building and learn something about the online, connected and mobile world of genealogy.
