Best of the Genea-Blogs - 8 to 14 May 2016

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Are In-person Genealogy Events Dead? by Amy Johnson Crow on the Amy Johnson Crow blog.  Amy doesn't think they are, and tells us why.  Lots of comments here!

*  Substitute Records, Secondary Information, and Indirect Evidence, Oh My! by Amie Bowser Tennant on the RootsBid blog.  Amie shares some lists for substitute vital records.

*  Ten Places to Peruse When You Visit Your Ancestral Home in New England by Heather Wilkinson Rojo on the Nutfield Genealogy blog.  Good ideas, but I have so many ancestral towns...

*  Heads Up: Fee Hike Coming by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Bad news here.

*  Jumpstarting Your Genealogy Brain by Anne Gillespie Mitchell on the Finding Forgotten Stories blog.  Anne has a great idea, and example too.

*  Notaries, A Friend Give an Explanation by Pennie Redmile on Barbara Poole's Life From the Roots blog.  Every researcher with French Canadian ancestry needs to know this.

*  Findmypast Makes Good on Mocavo Promise by the writer of the Ancestry Insider blog.  Good news for Mocavo users and all researchers.

*  What Would It Take to Speed Up the Genealogical Workflow? by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  James wants i to be faster and more accurate.

*  How to Improve the FamilySearch Family Tree by Applying the Genealogical Proof Standard by Diana Elder on the Family Locket blog.  Diana has excellent examples and ideas here.

*  Have You Ever Had a Genealogy “Duh Moment?” by Elizabeth O'Neal on the Little Bytes of Life blog.  Elizabeth did...and wrote about it.

*  New York City Marriage Indexes Online by Thomas Jay Kemp on the GenealogyBank Blog.  GenealogyBank has added a New York City marriage database.

*  Ten Years of Boston 1775 by J.L. Bell on the Boston 1775 blog.  J.L. has done a phenomenal job writing about pre-Revolution days.  Congratulations!  I read this every morning and marvel at the detail and analysis.

Here are pick posts by other geneabloggers this week:

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1590 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
