Best of the Genea-Blogs - 7 to 13 August 2016

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  IAJGS 2016 Conference Blogger Compendium by Emily Garber on the (Going) The Extra Yad blog.  Great job, Emily!

*  Setting Customer Expectations by Josh Jenkins on Thomas MacEntee's GenBiz Solutions blog.  Josh makes the case for compensation for genealogy work performed.

*  My First Mayflower Link – Maybe – and – it Only Took 36 Years! and Mary Fones,  Who Are Your Parents? and I Think It Works - George Soule Family by Linda Stufflebean on the Empty Branches on the Family Tree blog.  Looks like Linda may be one of my Soule cousins, but she had qualms about Mary's parents.

*  It Is Time For Some Walls to Crumble by Angela Walton-Raji on The African-Native American Genealogy Blog.   Angela's trying to make this happen with some success.

*  How Do I Know What I Don’t Know? (Part 1: Educational Opportunities) by Jenny Lanctot on The In-Depth Genealogist blog.  Jenny provides an excellent list of educational opportunities.

*  Why It's Important to Visit a Library In Your Ancestral Location by George G. Morgan on the MyHeritage Blog.  George describes some of the treasures you can find in a local library.

*  Ten Things to Try When You Hit as Genealogical Brickwall by Heather Wilkinson Rojo on the Nutfield Genealogy blog.  Heather offers some "smashing tools" for brickwall problems.

*  Gordon Atkinson and Fold3 – #BYUFHGC by the writer of The Ancestry Insider blog.  Mr. AI continues his summaries of presentations at the BYU Conference in July.

*  Dawn of the New Genealogical Information Age: Part Four -- It's In My DNA; Part Five -- We cross the divide by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  Yep.

*  Augmented and Virtual Genealogy? by John Newmark on the TransylvanianDutch blog.  Good ideas, but will it find my brickwall ancestors?

*  Making the Most of Your Genealogy Budget by Linda Stufflebean on the Empty Branches on the Family Tree blog.  Linda describes her methods.

Here are pick posts by other geneabloggers this week:

Friday Fossicking 12th August, 2016 by Crissouli on That Moment in Time blog.

Recommended Reads by Linda Stufflebean on the Empty Branches on the Family Tree blog.

*  Friday Favorites for August 12, 2016 by Heather Kuhn Roelker on the Leaves for Trees blog.

Friday Finds 11 August 2016 by Nichelle Barra on the Copper Leaf Genealogy blog.

*  Saturday Serendipity (August 13, 2016) by John D. Tew on the Filiopietism Prism blog.

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1590 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
