1861 Marriage Register Record for James A. Kemp and M.J. Sovereen in Norfolk County, Ontario - Treasure Chest Thursday #342

This week's treasure is the 1861 marriage register record for the marriage of James A. Kemp and M.J. Sovereen in Norfolk County, Ontario.

FamilySearch added (or updated) their Ontario, County Marriage Registers, 1858-1869 record collection today.  This is a Browse Only collection so I had to do a bit of digital microfilm searching to find the record.  My process was documented in Browsing the Ontario, Canada County Marriage Records (posted 30 Nov ember 2016).   Here is the record:

The Kemp/Sovereen record is the third line on the page:

The extracted information from this record includes:

*  Return of Marriages Solemnized by Rev. George Brown Minister of the Methodist ?????????? Church for the year ending 31st day of December A D 1861.

*  Bridegroom Name:  James A. Kemp
*  Bridegroom Age:  27
*  Bridegroom Residence:  Delhi C.W.
*  Bridegroom Birthplace:  Canada
*  Bridegroom Names of Parents:  Abram James and Sarah
*  Bride Name:  M.J. Sovereen
*  Bride Age:  21
*  Bride Residence:  Delhi
*  Bride Birthplace:  Delhi
*  Bride Names of Parents:  Alexander and Eliza
*  Witness Name:  Ridley Teeple
*  Witness Residence:  Delhi
*  Date of Marriage:  March 10th 1861

NOTE:  I cannot make out the name of this church, which I think is in Windham, Waterford or Middleton township in Norfolk County.  Is it "Methodist Treisfennevian"?

 I looked on Wikipedia, Googled it, and looked at the CanadaGenWeb pages without success.  Does someone have a list of churches in the 1860 time frame in Norfolk County?

UPDATED:  Richard Van Damme quickly got the church name - it is Methodist New Connexion.  I Googled that, and found several articles about it - see a photo of the church and the list of ministers at https://krassoc.wordpress.com/2013/09/02/waterford-methodist-church-brant-county/.  Thank you, Richard!!  I get by with help from my friends!

The source citation for this record is:

"Ontario, County Marriage Registers, 1858-1969," digital image, FamilySearch (https://FamilySearch.org : accessed 30 November 2016), Norfolk > 1858-1869, Vol. 44, page 59 (image 62 of 204), James A. Kemp and M.J. Sovereen marriage entry.

Previously, I had this information from an index transcription on Ancestry.com.  It is nice to see the actual Register, although it is not an Original Source document.

James Abraham Kemp (1831-1902) and Mary Jane Sovereen (1841-1874) are my second great-grandparents, through their daughter Georgianna Kemp (1868-1952) who married Charles Auble (1849-1916) in 1898.

Randy, take a look at Methodist New Connexion Church. If you blowup the image the letters will fit. Google Methodist New Connexion, it fits in with Canada. Rev Brown shows up again on image 88 with his church as Methodist N. C. Church. "Rich"

Hi rich,

Thank you for the help. "Connexion" seems so 21st century and not 19th century!

I will edit my post and mention your name!

Cheers -- Randy
