Seavers in the News - Frank R. Seaver Leaves a Legacy

It's time for another episode of "Seavers in the News" - articles about persons named Seaver who made the newspapers for some reason.

This week's article is from the Pasadena [Calif.] Star-News newspaper, dated Monday, 14 December 1964, on page 24, column 2:

The transcription of this article is:

"School to Benefit From Estate"

"Don Bosco Technical High School in San Gabriel is one of eight institutions benefitted by the will of the late industrialist Frank R. Seaver, who left a great portion of his $10.1 million estate to favorite philanthropies, friends said today.

"The amount of the trust fund which Seaver left for Bosco Tech was not announced.

"Seaver, who died at the age of 82 on Oct. 26, left his widow, Mrs. Blanche Seaver of Los Angeles, his personal effects and a trust fund.

"Other relatives received cash and income from a trust fund.

"Trust funds were also set up to contribute to Pomona College, Pilgrim Congregationasl Church of Pomona, Loyola University, the Roman Catholic Church of Los Angeles, Claremont College, Pepperdine College and Mt. St. Mary's College."

Who was Frank R. Seaver?  I checked my RootsMagic database, and easily found Franklin Roger Seaver, born 12 August 1883 in San Jose, California, son of Calton Seaver (1847-1927) and Mary Estella Samuels (1858-1954).  He married Blanche Ebert (1891-1994), and I don't believe that they had any children.

A biography for Frank Roger Seaver was published in the book:

Who's who in the Pacific Southwest : a compilation of authentic biographical sketches of citizens of Southern California and Arizona (Los Angeles : Times-Mirror Print. & Binding House, 1913), page 332.

The biography says:

"SEAVER, Frank Roger. Lawyer.  Res. 143 E. Holt Ave., Pomona, Cal; office, 317 Wilcox Bldg., Los Angeles, Cal.  Born in San Jose, Cal. in 1883; son of Carlton and Mary Estella (Samuels) Seaver.  Attended public schools of Claremont, Cal.; public and high schools of Pomona, Cal.; graduated from Pomona College, B.S., 1905; attended Law School of Harvard Univ., 1906-07; admitted to bar of Cal. in 1906; engaged in practice of law alone, 1908-11; formed partnership with brother, Byron D. Seaver, in 1911.  Atty. for Mutual Building & Loan Assn. of Pomona, Cal.; Municipal Corporation of Lordsburg, Cal.; Western Precipitation Co. of Los Angeles; atty. and dir. Wayside Press of Los Angeles; secy, Home Printing Co.; vice-pres. C. Seaver Co.: pres. Pomona College Alumni Assn.  Member N. G. C.; delegate to Republican conventions (Assembly, District and County); Board of Freeholders for drafting Los Angeles County Charter, 1912.  Member Board of Trade of Pomona, Cal.; Chamber of Commerce; University Club, Los Angeles; Harvard Club of So. Cal.; Masonic fraternity; Shrine.  Republican.  Congregationalist."

Interesting - he sure accomplished a lot in his first 30 years of life (this book was published in 1913).  I wondered if there was another obituary in a more recent book for the last 50 years?

Well, yes.  The California State Military Museums website has a long biography at  http://www.militarymuseum.org/Seaver.html.  There are also several books available that document his life and achievements.  The Online Archive of California has another biography and a finding aid for the papers of Frank R. and Blanche (Ebert) Seaver at  http://www.oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/c8g44pm3/entire_text/.

Wow!  He was pretty busy throughout his life.

Franklin Roger Seaver was my 4th cousin 4 times removed.

Thanks Randy I always enjoy Weaver's in the news! For someone who was a Congregationalist he left a lot of money to Roman Catholic institutions, Loyola, Don Bosco and the Roman Catholic Church of Los Angeles. Must be a story there!

Wonderful that he passed on some of his wealth to benefit so many people.
