SDGS Program Meeting on Saturday, 14 October, Features Colleen Greene

The Saturday, 14 October 2017, meeting of the San Diego Genealogical Society starts at 10 a.m. at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in San Diego (8350 Lake Murray Blvd., at Jackson Drive, San Diego, CA 92119).  

The program speaker for the two sessions is Colleen Greene.  Her topics are:

10 a.m.:  An Overview of Cloud Computing for Genealogy

Cloud computing refers to on-demand applications, data, and services hosted and shared over the internet.  This introductory presentation discusses the general concepts behind cloud computing, and why it matters to genealogy. It highlights genealogy-specific tools as well as general products that are useful to family historians, and showcases specific examples. We will discuss the benefits and risks associated with cloud computing, and take a look at trends that have a direct impact on genealogy.

11:15 a.m.:  Cloud Computing for Genealogy: Applications, Strategies, and Workflows

The list of cloud computing applications relevant to genealogists is constantly growing and changing.  This presentation looks at cloud-based tools that are particularly useful for storing, organizing, sharing, and collaborating on your genealogy research and society operations. We will discuss strategies for selecting the right tools to fit your needs, and demonstrate suggested workflows to improve your productivity.

Speaker's C.V.

Colleen Greene, MLIS, is a librarian, genealogist, historian, web developer, content strategist, and educator who teaches and presents on genealogy, web content strategy, social media, digital history tools, and other emerging technology tools and topics. She has a knack for being able to explain complex technology concepts in easy to understand terms. Colleen holds a Bachelor of Arts in History, a Masters of Library & Information Science, and a certificate in genealogical research from Boston University.  She is the Marketing & Web Systems Librarian at California State University, Fullerton. Colleen is also a faculty lecturer for the San Jose State University School of Information, where she teaches an online graduate-level U.S. genealogy course for future librarians, that focuses on the Genealogical Proof Standard.  Her website is http://www.colleengreene.com/.
