The Guild families of America were described in the book The Genealogy and History of the Guild, Guile and Gile Family by Charles Burleigh, published by Brown, Thurston & Company in 1887. The sketch for Nathaniel Guild on page 37-38 says[1]:
"Nathaniel Guild4 (Nathaniel3 Samuel2 John1), son of Nathaniel and Mehitable (Farrington or Hartshorn?) Guild, born at Walpole, Mass., March 20, 1712, married first, June 12, 1733, Mary Boyden, of Wrentham; published to Anna Rhodes, of Stoughton, April 27, 1777.
"He seems to have been, in his day and generation, a person of considerable enterprise, influence and usefulness. In a deed of land he is styled 'Gentleman,' and in those days it was no unmeaning title, being accorded with great discrimination. He received a grant of land in Dedham, near the house of John1 and acquired other lands by purchase.
"There was deeded to him a certain mine, which was probably in Stoughton, and for the working of which he formed a company. At Stoughtonham he carried on an iron furnace, where during the Revolutionary War was manufactured large quantities of gun carriage wheels, shot, and other munitions of war; and in Sept., 1776, he reported to Richard Devens 'that he was making the wheels and the double-headed shot.'
"About this time, also, he petitions " that men in his foundry may be exempted from service in the militia service, so that he may be able to supply garrison wheels and shot for the service," and Sept. 18, 1776, the prayer of the petition was granted, "it being of so great importance for the defence of this and the United States of America." Sept. 6, 1774, he was chosen at a convention of delegates of the people of Suffolk County, one of a select committee for the following purpose : 'Resolved, That under the present circumstances, it is incumbent on us to encourage arts and manufactures among us, by all means in our power,' and Nathaniel Guild, of Walpole, was appointed one of a committee 'to consider of the best ways and means to promote and establish the same, and report to this committee as soon as may be.'
"He is said to have been quite a dignified and good looking man of medium height, and during the latter part of his life, wore a powdered wig, and usually a blue cloak. He died Sept. 10, 1796."
Nathaniel Guild was born 20 March 1712 in Dedham, Massachusetts, the third child of twelve born to Nathaniel and Mehitable (Hartshorn) Guild[2].
He married Mary Boyden on 12 June 1733 in Dedham[8]. She was the daughter of Thomas and Deborah (Wight) Boyden. They had six children born between 1735 and 1752 in Walpole, Massachusetts.
Mary (Boyden) Guild died in March 1776, and Nathaniel Guild married, secondly, Anna Rhodes on 27 April 1777 in Walpole[3]. They had no children.
Nathaniel Guild died 9 September 1796 in Walpole[5-6], and was buried in the Guild Burial Ground in Walpole[7]. The gravestone inscription is:
"Nathaniel Guild
Died
Sept. 9, 1796
in the 87th year
of his age.
"Mr Nathaniel Guild lays beneath
this stone. He gave the land for
a burying ground and was the
first person buried here."
Nathaniel Guild, yeoman of Walpole, wrote a will on 29 September 1795 which was proved in 4 October 1796 in Norfolk County Probate Court[4]. The probate court proceedings are:
S.S. To all people to whom these presents shall come, William Heath Esq'r Judge of the Probate of Wills &c. in the County of Norfolk,within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, sendeth greeting.
Know ye that on the fourth day of October, Anno Domini 1796, the Instrument hereunto annexed, purporting the last will & Testament of Nathaniel Guild, late of Walpole, in said County, Yeoman, deceased, was presented for Probate by Samuel Guild the Executor, there-in named; then present Nathaniel Billing & Isaac Felch, witnesses thereto subscribed, who made oath, that they saw the said testator sign,seal, and heard him declare the said instrument to be his last Will and Testament, and that they, with Jonathan Billing, subscribed their names as witnesses to the execution thereof in the said testator's presence,; and that he was then, to the best of their judgment, of sound and disposing mind. I do prove, approve and allow of the said instrument as the last Will & Testament of the before named de-ceased, and do commit the administration thereof in all matters the same concerning, and of his estate thereof he died seized & possessed in said County, unto Samuel Guild the before named Executor, well & faithfully to execute the said Will, and to administer the estate of the said deceased according thereto, who accepted of his said trust, and gave bond to exhibit an Inventory of the said estate, within three months & to render an Account, upon oath of his proceedings, within one year.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand & seal of office, the day & year above written. W Heath
In the name of God, Amen. I Nathaniel Guild of Walpole, in the county of Norfolk, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,yeoman, considering the uncertainty of this mortal life, and being of sound & perfect mind and memory, blessed be Almighty God for the same, so make & publish this my last Will & Testament, in manner & form following (that is to say): First, I give & bequeath unto my beloved daughter Mehitable Guild (in consideration of the many years service she has done in my house since she became of age) one half of all my estate both real and personal, during her natural life; & in case she should marry, she shall quit said half, upon receiving one hundred silver dollars, well & truly paid by my Executor, & an equal share of my estate with her brothers & sisters. Also I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Anna Guild, to the heirs of my son Nathaniel Guild deceased, to my son Samuel Guild, & to my daughters, Mary Plimpton, Mercy Hewins, Susanna Morse & Mehitable Guild one half of all my estate both real & personal, during the natural life of my daughter, Mehitable Guild, and after the decease or marriage of the said Mehitable, I give unto them the whole of my estate to be equally divided among them, after one hundred dollars has been paid out of the same to the said Mehitable, in case she marrys.
Also I do hereby appoint and ordain my son Doctor Samuel Guild Esq'r of Easton my sole Executor of this my last Will & Testament; hereby revoking all former Wills by me made. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal the twenty ninth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & ninety five. Nathaniel Guild
Signed, sealed, published & declared by the abovenamed Nathaniel Guild, to be his last Will & Testament in the presence of us, who have here-unto subscribed our names as witnesses in the presence of the testator, Jon'a Billing Nath'l Billing Isaac Felch. Exam'd Sam'l Haven Reg'r
Norfolk Ss. In Probate Court at Dedham, within & for the same county of Norfolk, on Tuesday the fourth day of October, 1796. Ordered that Samuel Guild Executor of the last Will of Nathaniel Guild late of Walpole, deceased, advertise notifications of his being Executor as aforesaid, by posting the same up in some public places at Walpole in said County, & by publishing it in the In-dependent Chronicle printed in Boston, within three months.
