No matter which great-grandfather I choose and divided their birth year by 80, I get 23!

#23 of my ancestors is Catherine BECHETER, my 2x great-grandmother.

Catherine was born on 17 Sep 1816 in Ancerville, Moselle, France to Francois BECHETER and Anne Marie WILLAUME.

She married Francois MOUGIN on 13 Dec 1838 in Ancerville, and they had 2 children in France before emigrating to Vincennes, Indiana by June 1850. One son born in France possibly died enroute to America. There were 2 other daughters born in Indiana in by 1854.

On April Fools Day of 1863 Catherine played an April Fish joke on her neighbor, Joseph ORLEANS (who was married to Catherine's sister-in-law via the marriage of Catherine's brother back in France), by throwing straw at his horses. ORLEANS then sued the MOUGIN family for causing harm to his horses. A court ruling in the court of the Justice of the Peace of Vincennes Township held for the MOUGIN family (many in the jury were French) and ordered ORLEANS to pay the MOUGIN family $24. A second trial the Knox County Court of Common Pleas found for ORLEANS and ordered MOUGIN to pay ORLEANS $20 and $101.50 in costs.

ORLEANS got a warrant out on Francois MOUGIN because the family had sold off their land (on 2 Apr 1863) and were returning to France. Indeed, the MOUGIN family did return to their home in France. Catherine BECHETER signed the parish register of Remilly (nearby Ancerville) as the godmother of her niece's daughter, Marie Anne VACELET (daughter of Jules Alexandre VACELET & Anne Marie MOUGIN), just 19 days after the case was dismissed in Knox County, Indiana.

By 1865 the MOUGIN family had again returned to settle near Vincennes, Indiana, where the daughters of Catherine BECHETER all married and raised families. Catherine BECHETER died on 10 Jan 1891 at Vincennes, Indiana, at the age of 74.Lynnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16330072826445751191noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26204193.post-9147145025162846942014-07-26T23:30:27.304-07:002014-07-26T23:30:27.304-07:001) I chose my great grandfather Hiram Huffman he w...1) I chose my great grandfather Hiram Huffman he was born in 1849.
