Saturday Night Fun - Who's Number 21?

Hey, it's Saturday Night, let's have some fun figuring out who is Number 21 in your ancestry from your memory or your genealogy database.

Do you know how to create an Ahnentafel list or Ahnentafel report in your genealogy software? Make yourself number 1 on the list, then create the list or report - you do know how to do that, right? If not, I can help you with FTM 16, FTM 2008/9, and Legacy Family Tree - please ask!

What I want to know, since this is the 21st of February (at least where I am right now):

Who is #21 on your Ahnentafel list?

My #21 is one of my eight second great-grandmother's:

21. Hannah Rich, born 14 April 1824 in Hilperton, Wiltshire, ENGLAND; died 07 August 1911 in Putnam, Windham County, CT. She was the daughter of 42. John Rich and 43. Rebecca Hill.

Your #21 will be one of your eight second-great-grandmothers too! Can you name all eight off the top of your head? I can, but only if I recite the first 14 ancestors!

Either write up your answer on your own blog (and provide more detail for this precious ancestor of yours) or make a comment to this post. This lovely lady contributed about 6.67% of your DNA to make you who and what you are today. Did you get her best genes? You can see a picture of my lovely Hannah (Rich) Richman/Richmond here. She's the one seated (third from the left) with her hands neatly folded in her lap.

Hi Randy ~
Fun question! I put a short post on my blog answering it. Right now I am trying to recite my 8 great-great grandmothers!!

Well, Randy, I just don't know how you come up with all these Saturday night fun things. I will have a look and see who my #21 is.

I have awarded you the Kreativ Blogger Award. See my posting at: CanadaGenealogy

Let's see, from memory... #21 should be the mother of #10, who is the father of #5, who is the mother of #2. #2 is dad, #5 is my grandmother, Alida Melessen, #10 is my great-grandfather, Albert Melessen. His parents were Jakob Melessen and Attje Bansema, so #21 is Attje Bansema.

OK – I decided to do a chart & then I hit all the wrong buttons. Paper & pencil would have been easier!

#21 – Sarah WEDD, daughter of Sarah WOODS and James WEDD,
christened 10 July 1814 at Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire, England. Married Charles SAGGERS, 8 December, 1838 in Bassingbourn. She died 23 September 23, 1864 at Bassingbourn. Her's and Charles' children were: Benjamin Saggers; Lydia Saggers; Ellen Saggers; Sarah Saggers; James Saggers; David Saggers, (my line) born September 28, 1849 in Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire, England. married Sarah Ann Staines November 7, 1874 in Paddington, Middlesex, England, died January 17,1935 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; George Saggers;
Frederick Saggers; Fanny Saggers. Wish I did know more that's 'personal' about Sarah WEDD.
Hope I didn't miss any one of the children - but if anyone has a SAGGERS from Bassingbourn, I think we're related somehow.

Goldarn, Randy, you stirred us up just when we were looking for the Saturday night movie. Like Diana, you are making me blog about it! (http://brendadougallmerriman.blogspot.com).

Hi Randy,
Longtime reader, first time poster here. What a great idea! I had so much fun doing this on my blog! Only, I don't know who my #21 is so I used #31 instead which was interesting because it was strictly maternal that way (my maternal grandmother's maternal grandmother). Thanks for the fun idea!

I have know idea if I did this right, Randy - I made the afnentafal like you said - and then just looked for #21 - was that right? Well if not - it was
fun any way!

Your challenge came on Sunday a.m. here. I learned how to have Legacy determine #21 for me. No way I could do this from memory. I work on my own lines, my husband's lines and my ex-husband's lines. She is:
21. Mary S. __________, daughter of Unknown and Unknown, was born about 1823 in New York and died before 1900.
In 1870 census at age 49 in Bedford, NY with Alvira 17, Mary and William 10, Elbert 8, and Charles 13.
In 1880 census at age 59 in Bedford, NY with Mary 20 and Elbert 18.

Mary married Horace Baker Reynolds before 1842. Horace was born in 1814 in North Salem, Westchester, New York and died on 18 Aug 1866 in North Salem, Westchester, New York at age 52. They had 14 children -
i. George B. born about 1840.
ii. Phebe born about 1842.
iii. Ellen born about 1844. Ellen married Elijah Austin before 1860. Elijah was born in 1837.
iv. Rhoda born about 1845.
v. Benjamin Franklin Reynolds (born on 18 Aug 1847 in Chestnut Ridge, NY (near Armonk) - died on 4 Nov 1934 in Purdys, Westchester, New York, USA).
vi. Oscar Reynolds was born about 1849.
vii. Amos? born about 1852.
viii. Alvira born about 1853.
ix. Kate born in 1855.
x. Charles born in 1857.
xi. Mary born in 1859.
xii. William born in 1859.
xiii. Elbert born in 1862.
xiv. James was born in 1867.

Just had to add the children just in case a cousin comes across this. I obviously have work to do to determine Mary's maiden name and parents.
Thanks for the nudge.

Good question! I clicked on my Roots Magic, asked for my #21, and got...

Anne Thorstensdatter, born 1820 in Kongsberg, Norway; died after 1875. Her father was Torsten Halvorsen, mother at this time unknown.

I see I have to do more research on this branch. The only information I have on her parents and her birth is from her marriage records, but I have her husband's family well documented. Thanks for bringing this to my attention...I'll just add this to that "little" list of genealogical things to catch up on!!

OK, Randy, you really started something here - I think I have a new obsession: http://gretabog.blogspot.com/2009/02/my-number-21-new-obsession.html.

You must be some sort of brilliant mastermind to get so many people so fired up at the same time.

My #21 is Magdalena Petersen. She was born around 1844 in Denmark, probably in Mellerup, close to the German border. Her father was Cornelius Petersen. She married Hans Boisen in 1861 as his 2nd wife. Her son Peter Andrew was born in 1864. In 1881 Peter followed his half-brother Hjeronimus to America. How they ended up in Champaign Co., OH, rather than the usual places Danish immigrants went, I don't know! But I have his the wooden trunk he carried his possessions in. Right now, my TV sits on it. I also have a silver spoon from Magdalena's wedding inscribed with the date and her father's name. I have a number of letters she wrote to her son. Writing this reminds me that I need to get those letters translated!

My #21 is Hanna Minka (Unknown) Smorgonski. I know absolutely nothing about her. I put up a short post about it.

My #21 is my great-great-grandmother, Blanche (Welden) Mertena. She was born 31 Aug 1883 in Coffeysburg, Daviess, Missouri, to James William Welden and Henrietta Murl Renfro. The family moved to Logan County, Oklahoma by 1900. Blanche married my great-great-grandfather, John Henry Mertena, on 25 Dec 1907 in Mulhall in Logan County. They only had one child, my great-grandfather, Merlen Paris "Zack" Mertena, on 9 Sep 1910 in Mulhall. Blanche died on 5 Feb 1970 in Sulphur, Calcasieu, Louisiana. My great-grandparents had moved there in Dec 1952 due to Zack's job transfer with Conoco Oil. Blanche is buried in Marshall, Logan, Oklahoma in the IOOF Cemetery.
