Best of the Genea-Blogs - 25 to 31 August 2013

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Autosomal DNA: A Revelation for African-Americans Searching For Their Roots by CeCe Moore on the Your Genetic Genealogist blog.  Great story...

*  Travels on the Web - Resources for Genealogists - Destination South Kingston, Rhode Island by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  I wish more geneabloggers would do posts like this - it's worthy of a page in the FamilySearch Research Wiki.  It's also one of my ancestral towns.

*  The 5 Best Free Sites for Online Newspaper Research for Genealogy by Kenneth R. Marks on The Ancestor Hunt blog.  These are all excellent, I wish Ken had listed 10!

*  52 Questions in 52 Weeks by Steve Anderson on the FamilySearch Blog.  Here is an excellent list of questions to ask a person about their life.

*  My View: The Many Facets of the Genealogy Community by Thomas MacEntee on the Destination: Austin Family blog.  Thomas started a conversation with questions in Genealogy: AHouse Divided or A House With Many Doors? and provides his own answers here.

*  Accurately Searching for My Ordinary Ancestors by Michael John Neill on the Rootdig.com blog.  Michael is not a fan of celebrity genealogy, and thinks "...there are no boring ancestors..."

*  Some Thoughts About Cindy Crawford on "Who Do You Think You Are?" by Heather Wilkinson Rojo on the Nutfield Genealogy blog.  Heather provides a great list of resources about royal European ancestry.

*  Exploring Your Ancestors World with Geography by Jen Baldwin on the Archives.com Expert Series.  Jen highlights the National Geographic Magazine, and lists several online map repositories.

*  12 Genealogy Things You Need to Know This Morning by Caroline M. Pointer on the 4YourFamilyStory.com blog.  Check out these goodies from Caroline.

*  More Changes to Facebook's TOS by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy helps us understand the changes.

These genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week:

*  Follow Friday - Favorites for August 30, 2013 by Heather Kuhn Roelker on the Leaves For Trees blog.

*  Friday Finds  -08/30/13 by Julie Cahill Tarr on Julie's Genealogy & Family History Hub blog.

*  Follow Friday - Fab Finds for August 30, 2013 by Jana Last on Jana's Genealogy and Family History Blog.

*  News and Blog Posts for Genealogists, August 30, 2013 by Michael Leclerc on the Mocavo Genealogy Blog.

*  Saturday Serendipity, August 31, 2013 by John D. Tew on the Filiopietism Prism blog.

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1400 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
