Best of the Genea-Blogs - 15-21 December 2013

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  What Is It About Genealogists and the SSDI? by Barbara Mathews on The MGC Sentinel blog. Barbara summarizes what's about to happen to the Social Security Death Index after action by Congress.

*  Facebook for Genealogists: Threads by Cyndi Ingle on the Cyndi's List blog.  Cyndi provides common sense guidelines for using Facebook groups and other forums for genealogy discussion and research.

*  Thoughts on "Browsing Genealogical Proof" by John D. Reid on the Canada's Anglo-Celtic connections blog.  John argues that we really can't "prove" anything in genealogy without DNA testing.

*  Going In-Depth: December 2013 by the In-Depth Genealogist team.  This monthly digital genealogy magazine has excellent articles on a range of subjects.

*  Where I would Like Genealogy To Be in Five or Ten Years by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  James has his crystal ball out again, and has some good predictions.

*  Digital Folder Naming and Organizing Made Easy by Diane Gould Hall on the Michigan Family Trails blog.  Diane shows how she names digital files and organizes file folders.

*  Shades, The Magazine - The Toys Issue by footnoteMaven on the Shades of the Departed blog.  A new issue of the famous and indispensable Shades, The Magazine!  Read and enjoy!

*  Treasure Chest Thursday (December 19, 2013): The Tew Family Holiday Newsletters by John D. Tew on the Filiopietism Prism blog.  What a superb idea as an heirloom gift for your children and later generations.  I love it!

*  SSDI: The Fat Lady Sings by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy discusses what will happen to the SSDI, and notes that it could have been worse.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1400 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
