Best of the Genea-Blogs - 25 to 31 October 2015

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  The Changes at 23andMe by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy highlights the changes coming to 23andMe and her opinion of the DNA testing site and services.

*  Researching an Oops! by Linda Stufflebean on the Empty Branches on the Family Tree blog.  What an interesting research journey, and life situations in Denmark for Linda's ancestor.

*  Genealogy in Your Pocket - The Mobile Scanner by Denise Barrett Olson on the Moultrie Creek Gazette blog.  Denise demonstrates in a video how she uses her phone to scan a multi-page document.

*  Thinking Outside the Box by Roberta J. Estes on the DNAeXplained - Genetic Genealogy blog.  Roberta explains her DNA project, and describes how Bennett Greenspan began the science of DNA testing for genealogy.

*  Hear ye! Hear ye! Order in the Court! by Larry Naukam on The In-Depth Genealogist blog.  Larry describes some of the useful and interesting court records that might be found for your ancestor.

*  9 Ways to Success in Searching Old Newspapers For Your Ancestors by Kenneth R. Marks on The Ancestor Hunt blog.  Ken created an excellent graphic.

*  Genealogy Should Not Be a Solitary Passion.  Use the Buddy System! by Paula Stuart-Warren on the Genealogy by Paula blog.  Paula thinks we can do better work by working with other researchers.

*  A New Paradigm -- How to Work with the Large Online Genealogy Programs: Part Three; Part Four; Part Five by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  James thinks that new technology radically change traditional research methodology.  I agree.

*  Try These Two Powerful Tools for Finding Genealogy Records Online by Sunny Morton on Lisa Louise Cooke's Genealogy Gems blog.  Sunny has excellent tips here.

*  The Care and Preservation of Family Bibles by Melissa Barker on the A Genealogist in the Archives blog.  Melissa discusses how to preserve family Bibles.

*  What Kind of Genealogist Are You? by Lorine McGinnis Schulze on the Legacy News blog.  Definitely Hunter/Detective for me.

Here are pick posts by other geneabloggers this week:

*  Recommended Reads by Linda Stufflebean on the Empty Branches on the Family Tree blog.

Hi Randy, Thank you for including Empty Branches "Researching an Oops" on your list this week. It took months of tedious work to uncover Johannes Jensen's story so he isn't lost to time. I wouldn't have succeeded without the help of the Scandinavian staff at the Family History Library. They are beyond terrific.

Thanks a lot, Randy, for mentioning the court records item this week. All the stories are true!

Randy,
Read Tanner's and Myrt's posts and your replies - really liked the summation Myrt did of the history and I agree with her. since I am thinking of starting a Blog, one would hope that there are people out there still reading them. Facebook just bores and confuses me and I use it as little as possible.
