Best of the Genea-Blogs - 3 to 9 January 2016

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  A Dozen Places to Find Immigrant Origins by Juliana Szucs on the Ancestry.com blog.  I would add the Social Security Application also.

*  Ordering the SS-5: Redux by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy describes the Social Security Application and how to order it.

*  NYPL Offers High-Quality Downloads of 180,000 Public-Domain Documents by Jonathan Crowe on The Map Room blog.  Jonathan found 21,000 historical maps!

*  PERSI: The Most Potent Genealogy Resource You Haven't Used ... Until Now by Frederick Wertz on the Findmypast Blog.   The good news is that page images are being digitized by Allen County Public Library and Findmypast.

*  Joining Your Family's Native American Tribe by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Lisa Arnold on the Ancestry.com Blog.  This article describes the requirements and the process.

*  A Funny Thing Happened ... by Wendy Mathias on the Jollett, Etc. blog.  Wendy and herm other joined the DAR.

*  Steve Morse's One Step Website ~ If You Thought It Was Only for Passenger Records -- Think Again! by Diane Gould Hall on the Michigan Family Trails blog.  Diane reminds us that Steve Morse's website has much more than passenger list search forms.

*  Ask Yvette -- What is GenealogieOnline? by Yvette Hoitink on the Dutch Genealogy blog.  Yvette describes the concept and the content of this family tree website based in the Nerherlands.

*  We Still Need Family History Centers! by Peggy Clemens Lauritzen on the Always Anxiously Engaged blog.  Yes we do.  Peggy discusses the microfilm scanners too./

Here are pick posts by other geneabloggers this week:

*  GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 8 January 2016 by Jill Ball on the GeniAus blog.

Recommended Reads by Linda Stufflebean on the Empty Branches on the Family Tree blog.

Friday Finds January 2 - 8 by Nichelle Barra on the Copper Leaf Genealogy blog.

*  Friday Finds ~ Fab Finds for January 8, 2016 by Jana Last on Jana's Genealogy and Family History Blog.

This Week's Creme de la Creme -- January 9, 2016 by Gail Dever on the Genealogy a la Carte blog.

*  Saturday Serendipity (January 9, 2016) by John D. Tew on the Filiopietism Prism blog.

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1590 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
