Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Lifespans of Your 2nd Great Grandparents

It's Saturday Night -
time for more Genealogy Fun!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible! music) is to:

1)  We each have 16 great-great grandparents.  How did their birth and death years vary?  How long were their lifespans?

2)  For this week, please list your 16 great-great grandparents, their birth year, their death year, and their lifespan in years.  You can do it in plain text, in a table or spreadsheet, or in a graph of some sort.

3)  Share your information about your 16 great-great grandparents with us in a blog post of your own, in a comment to this blog post, or on Facebook or Google+.  If you write your own blog post, please leave a link as a comment to this post.

Here's mine:

My 16 great-great-grandparents are, by ahnentafel number:

16.  Isaac Seaver (1823-1901), 78 years

24.  David Jackson Carringer (1828-1902), 74 years

31.  Mary Jane Sovereen (1840-1874), 34 years

The average birth year for these 16 great-greats is 1829, with a range from 1817 to 1844.

The average death year is 1899, with a range from 1865 to 1931.

  1. Randy, I LOVED this SNGF challenge! My average was a little younger than yours at 68. That seems so YOUNG! I'm looking forward to seeing what others statistics show. Here's my post: http://theenthusiasticgenealogist.blogspot.com/2016/04/sngf-lifespans-of-my-2nd-great.html

(Oh, and is it OK to use your "clipart"? If not, I'll remove it.)

  16. Randy this was a cool challenge! The birth years range from 1797-1829 and the death years range from 1846-1898. The life spans range from 37-87 with the average age being 59. The youngest died at age 28 (female) and the oldest lived to age 87 (male). I found it interesting that no one lived into their 90s. Only 3 made it into their 80s (1 female, 2 males). One (female) made it to the 70s. Four made it to their 60s. Three were in their 50s; three in their 40s; one in her 30s; and one in her 20s.

  17. My 16 great-great-grandparents are, by ahnentafel number:

    16. Bernhard Heinrich REMME (1800-1873), 73 years
    17. Maria Engel HACKMANN (1799-1861), 62 years
    18. Aldrich 'Oldig' OLDIGES (1805-1870), 65 years
    19. Regina BRAKE (1809-1865), 56 years
    20. Michael KRUEGER (1828-xxxx), unknown
    21. Anna RZEZINSKA (1829-xxxx), unknown
    22. François MOUGIN (1813-1869), 58 years
    23. Catherine BECHETER (1816-1891), 75 years

    24. Michel ROSMAN (1806-1890), 84 years
    25. Marie Monique BAILLEUX (1811-1890), 79 years
    26. Camille Eugène (Auguste) Oswald ENGLEBERT de BUISSERET (1822-1873), 51 years
    27. Marie Catherine Josèphe BOULANGER (1829-1903), 82 years
    28. Landolin WETZEL (1824-1867), 43 years
    29. Marianna ERBSLAND (1827-1902), 74 years
    30. August Joseph IMHOFF (1829-1912), 82 years
    31. Marie Delphine 'Adele' SALLOT (1832-1880), 48 years

Unfortunately, I do not know the death dates of my ancestors from Poland. Half of these families were immigrant families and they all died in or near Knox County, Indiana. Those which were not immigrants were: REMME-HACKMANN (Hollage, Niedersachsen, Germany, son took the name of the farm - RECKER), OLDIGES-BRAKE (Esterwegen, Niedersachsen, Germany), KRUEGER-RZEZINSKA (Biala, Wielkopolski, Poland), and ROSMAN-BAILLEUX (Meix-le-Tige, Luxembourg, Belgium).

The average birth year for these 16 great-greats grandparents is 1817, with a range from 1799 to 1832.

The average death year for the known 14 great-great grandparents is 1882, with a range from 1861 to 1912.

So the average lifespan is about 65 years for my 14 known great-great-grandparents, with a range of 43 to 84 years. Males averaged a lifespan of 65 years, and females averaged a lifespan is 68 years.

I haven't looked at all the others, but I did not notice many 100+ GGG's. But we had two. One each for me and my husband.

  19. I know I have a lot of work to do (I am a really recent convert). Here is what I have thus far:
John Bissell Tyler 1800-1851 51 years

    Hiram Noble 1817-1863 46 years
    Lucinda House 1815-1865 50 years
    George Hale 1843 -- ??
    Martha Hargrove: 1843??
    Elijah Watrous Smith 1803 – 1885 83
Louisa Jane Smith 1823-1906 82 years
    Edward Cox 1833 - ??
    Ann Owen 1834
    Thomas Harris 1852 - ??
    Catherine Cavanaugh 1852-1931 79
    Samuel Moodie 1847
    Eleanor Hawthorne 1848
    William White 1849 – 1905 56
    Catherine Bleiel 1845 – 1926 81

The oldest was born in 1800; the youngest in 1852. The death date is unknown for several but the oldest seems to have reached 81 and the youngest 46 years.

The youngest died at 48 and the oldest lived to 91 years. Quite a difference.
