Seavers in the News - John Seaver Dies in Fort Scott, Kansas in 1919

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Fort Scott [Kansas] Tribune and Fort Scott Monitor newspaper dated 22 February 1919:

The transcription of the article is:

"PIONEER RESIDENT DEAD

"John Seaver, Aged 83, Came to Bourbon county in 1857 -- Died at 10 a.m. Funeral Friday at 2:30 p.m.

"The death of John Seaver, aged 83 years, at 10 o'clock this morning, takes another pioneer resident of Bourbon county away.  He passed away at his home in the Lath Branch neighborhood, three miles east of Fort Scott, having been seriously ill for the past three weeks with diabetes.

"He was never married and is survived by five brothers and two sisters -- David, Wesley and William of this vicinity, Abram of Green Springs, Mo., and James, in California; Mrs. Margaret Hulse of Stockton, Cal., and Mrs. Catherine Jacks of Fort Scott.

"John Seaver was born in Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, February 14,1836, and was 83 years of age his last birthday.  He was a prominent farmer and one of the three oldest pioneer residents of this locality.

"Mr. Seaver served in the civil war as a member of Company K, Sixth Kansas cavalry.  He enlisted March 10, 1862, and was discharged in March 1865.

"The funeral services will be held from the family home, Friday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. S.L. Buckner of the M.E. church.  Interment will take place in the National cemetery."

"Pioneer Resident Dead" Fort Scott [Kan.] Tribune and Fort Scott Monitor newspaper, obituary, Thursday, 22 February 1919, page 2, column 4, John Seaver obituary;   Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 16 May 2019).

This obituary provides a death date, a birth date and the names of seven of his siblings.  In addition, his life history in the public arena.

I had John Seaver (1836-1919) in my RootsMagic family tree, with his birth and death date.  I have all seven of his living siblings in the tree.

John Seaver was the son of David Seaver (1810-1891) and Margaret Ann Helm (1811-1892), who married in 1831 in Pennsylvania, and had 10 children there and an 11th in Indiana.  They moved to Fort Scott, Kansas in about 1857.

I am not related to John Seaver or his siblings.  David Seaver was a descendant of Michael Severs (1765-1825) who was born in Germany.
