My friend, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED.  Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link).  It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Ellen's Questions Part 2

Calling all Genea-Musings Fans: 

 It's Saturday Night again - 

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music, please!):

1)  Ellen Thompson-Jennings posted 20 questions on her blog last week - see Even More Questions About Your Ancestors and Maybe A Few About You (posted 27 June). 

2)  We will do these five at a time - Questions 6 to 10 tonight (we did 1 through 5 last week)

3)  Tell us about it in your own blog post, in a comment on this post, or in a Facebook post.

Here's mine:

6)  How many DNA companies have you tested with or transferred to? Have you tested at all the 5 major companies? 

I have tested with AncestryDNA (spit), 23andMe (swab), FamilyTreeDNA (swab), MyHeritage (transfer) and LivingDNA (transfer) and DNA.Land (transfer).  

I have also tested my Y-DNA at GeneBase and my mitochondrial DNA at FamilyTreeDNA.

7)  Do you have an ancestor that had a successful business? Is it still in business?  

I think the closest ancestor who had a business was my 2nd great-grandfather, Devier J. Smith (1839-1894), who had a livery business in McCook, Nebraska in the 1885 time frame.  He handed it to his son David D. Smith and it was sold when David moved to San Diego before 1900.

My 2nd great-grandfather David Auble (1817-1894) had a "boot and shoe business" in Newton, New Jersey, Newark, New Jersey, and Terre Haute, Indiana from the 1840s until about 1892.  

My 4th great-grandfather, Philip Jacob Konig (1764-1829) owned a grist mill in York, Pennsylvania, and passed it to his heirs.

8)  How long ago was your last “genealogy/DNA happy dance?”

I call them "genea-gasms" but whatever.  It's been awhile, I'm afraid.  Perhaps the last one was discovering the parentage of 4th great-grandmother Catherine Ruth (1770-1813) last year.

9)  Did you ever discover that a friend was also a distant cousin?

Because of my extensive New England ancestry, I have discovered that many genealogy friends, some of whom I've met, are my distant cousins.  I know that I am a distant cousin of Pat Richley-Erickson, David Rencher, Dave Robison, Bill West, Heather Wilkinson Rojo, Jen Baldwin, Midge Frazel, and many more!  I chose the people who immediately came to mind, and I know I missed hundreds of others.  If I am your cousin, please tell me and i'll add your name to my list above (I really need to start a list in a chart, I think).

10)  Do you have a genealogy brick wall? Do you think you will be able to use DNA to work past it? 

My genea-cave is lined with brick walls!  I have hundreds of them.  Many of them are too far back in time (5th great-grandparents or earlier) for DNA to provide conclusive evidence.

I think I have solved one of them with DNA - the grandparents of my 2nd great-grandfather Devier J. Smith (1839-1894) who was adopted.  I have a 4th cousin Lanfear DNA match at MyHeritageDNA who is a descendant from Isaac and Rosannah (Laun) Lanfear of Lorraine, New York.  However, I don't know which child of Isaac and Rosina is the parent of Devier!

I hope to find a Newton or Brigham DNA match in Massachusetts that might lead me to the father of my 2nd great-grandmother, Sophia (Newton) Hildreth (1834-1923).  I have had no luck yet with that one.

I hope to find a Knapp DNA match in Connecticut or New York that might lead me to the father of my 3rd great-grandfather William Knapp (1775-1856) of Dutchess County, New York, but have had no luck there to date.  

I have several DNA matches in Wiltshire for my Richman and Marshman lines that do not have my 3rd great-grandparents John Richman (1788-1867) and Ann Marshman (1784-1856) in the directl ine, so I hope to identify their parents sometime soon.

The ancestry of George Wheeler's wife, Katherine Pin or Penn, is not positively known.  Some online family trees claim her parents were Henry and Catherine (Hull) Penn, married in Buckinghamshire in 1612.

Explore your early American roots this weekend with a selection of new additions, including:

British Officers Serving In Early America, 1614-1787

Explore six fascinating 19th century publications that record then names and details of British Army Officers serving in America prior to and during the Revolutionary War. These lists will allow you to discover your ancestor's rank, regiment and details surrounding their service history. Each record is available in a PDF format.

Pennsylvania Immigrants, 1727-1776

Explore this 1856 publication which, in its own words, is a 'A Collection of Upwards Of Thirty Thousand Names Of German, Swiss, Dutch, French And Other Immigrants In Pennsylvania From 1727 To 1776: With A Statement Of The Names Of Ships, Whence They Sailed, And The Date Of Their Arrival At Philadelphia, Chronology.'

As well as names, these records may also provide you with historical and biographical notes. The prefece went on to add that 'present descendants of the early German, Swiss and French immigrants, now numbering millions living in Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Virginia, and in the Western States, will be enabled, if they procure this publication, to ascertain the time of their ancestors' arrival and other facts of value to most of them.'

Pennsylvania, Oath of Allegiance

Did your ancestor arrive in Pennsylvania between 1727 and 1775 or between 1786 and 1808? This records hold the names of thousands of male immigrants who were required to take an oath of allegiance to the British Crown and the Province of Pennsylvania as well as immigration lists between 1786 and 1808. Within these pages you will find your ancestor's name, the ship they arrived on, there and arrival ports, and arrival date. Names are organised by vessel.

All males over sixteen years of age were obliged to take this oath and declaration, as soon as after arrival as possible. The lists of foreigners arriving after 1786 including the names of wives and children. The full oath can actually be found on image number 9. An index to surnames begins on image number 675.

British Army Records & Regimental Histories

One new publication, The CIV and the War - Illustrated Souvenir of the City of London Imperial Volunteers, has been added to the collection. As quoted at the beginning of the publication, 'The history of the City of London Imperial Volunteers for service in South Africa is of a very interesting character and well illustrates the loyal feeling that always animates the Corporation and the citizens in times of emergency.'

British & Irish newspaper update

This week we have added 132,230 brand new pages to the collection. We are delighted to welcome over 100,000 pages to our specialist country pursuits publication Field, which covers an array of topics, such as farming, fishing and country house management. It is a wonderful window into the world of the Victorian country gentleman, and we now have 2,348 issues available to search. We have also added new pages to two of our Staffordshire titles – the Walsall Observer, and South Staffordshire Chronicle and the Staffordshire Sentinel. These new pages cover the late 1890s and early 1900s,

International records update – Austria

Three indexes of Austrian births, baptisms, marriages and burials are now available to search. These indexes contain more than 165,000 names and cover nearly three centuries of the country's history between 1651 and 1940 and will automatically generate hints against any names stored in your Findmypast family tree.

Anna (Beck) Van Vorst ( (1704- before 1749) is #483 on my Ahnentafel List, my 6th great-grandmother, who married  #482 Jacobus Jillise Van Vorst (1703-1797)  in 1728 in Albany, New York.

I am descended through:

*  their daughter #241 Anna Van Vorst (1732-1789) married #240 John Kemp (1723-1795) in about 1760.

*  their son #120 John Kemp (1768-1864) married #121 Mary Dafoe (1776-1832) in 1795.

*  their son #60 Abraham Kemp (1795-1881) married #61 Sarah Fletcher (1802-before 1850) in 1818.

*  their son #30 James Abraham Kemp (1831-1902) married #31 Mary Jane Sovereen (18401874) in 1861.

The data for this family was obtained from a book by Cuyler Reynolds, Hudson-Mohawk Genealogical and Family Memoirs[1]; a book by Jonathan Pearson, Contributions for the Genealogies of the Descendants of the First Settlers of Patent and City of Schenectady from 1662 to 1800[2]; a book by Austin A. Yates, Schenectady County, New York : its history to the close of the nineteenth century[3];  and the Van Vorst Papers collection in the Schenectady Library.  Cheryl Kemp Taber has researched and collected a wealth of information about this family, and posted it in her WorldConnect database on Rootsweb (wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com) titled "Kemps and Kin" updated 27 December 2017[4].

Anna Beck was born in Schenectady, New York, and was baptized in the First Dutch Reformed Church in Schenectady on 7 October 1704[2-5], the first child of parents Caleb Beck and Anna Mol.  The sponsors were Matthew Schinks and Maria Meby.

She married Jacobus Van Vorst in Albany's Dutch Reformed Church on 14 February 1728[2-4,7].  They had nine children, all born in Schenectady and only Caleb and Elizabeth are not in the Schenectady church baptismal records:

*  Elizabeth Van Vorst (1730-1805), married 1747 to Gerardus Quackenbush (1721-????).

*  Anna Van Vorst (1732-1789), married (1) Nicolas Tjerkse Van der Bogart (1723-1758) in 1753 and (1) John Kemp (1723-1795).

*  Jellis Van Vorst (1735-1823), married 1756 Annatje Berrit (1736-1810).

*  Engeltje Van Vorst (1738-1821), married Thomas Welch (1732-1821).

*  Johannes Van Vorst (1741-1844), married 1762 Sarah Kittel (1744-1834).

*  Abraham Van Vorst (1743-1837), married 1769 Maria Heemstraat (1751-1835).

*  Jan Baptist Van Vorst (1746-1830), married 1768 Margarita Marinus (1737-????).

Anna's father, Caleb Beck wrote his will on 8 March 1728, and it was proved on 3 October 1733 in Albany County Surrogates Court[6].  Anna (Beck) Van Vorst was not named in the will.

There is no known death record or burial record for Anna (Beck) Van Vorst.  She certainly died after her last child was born on 23 February 1746, and before Jacobus married, secondly, Sarah Fonda, daughter of Jellis Fonda, on 20 May 1749 in Schenectady[2], leaving Jacobus with at least seven minor children.
