Seavers in The News - Mrs. Mary Sever (1882-1941) Dies in Ohio in 1941

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Pottsville [Penn.] Republican newspaper dated 29 September 1941:

The transcription of the article is:

"Mrs. Mary Seaver
Mrs. Mary Seaver, wife of the late John Seaver, of Arnout's Addition died in the Mt. Royal Hospital, Brecksville, O., Sunday morning.  She was admitted a year ago.

"Mrs. Seaver was a member of St. Boniface Church, St. Clair.  To survive there are these children:  August and Francis at home; John, a seaman; Jos. and Mary of Cleveland, O., and four sisters and a brother, in Ohio.

"The funeral will be held from her home Thursday morning, E.J. Monahan, St. Clair, is the funeral director."

The source citation is:

"Mrs. Mary Seaver," Pottsville [Penn.] Republican newspaper, obituary, Monday, 29 September 1941, page 9, column 7, Mrs. Mary Seaver obituary;  Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 3 September 2020).

This obituary provides a married name, a death date, a death place, names of her husband and their children, and mentions siblings without naming them.

I found the John and Mary Sever family (with August, Aulioas, Frank, John, Joseph and Mary in the 1930 U.S. Census in St. Clair, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, which provided birth years and birth states/countries for the family members.  Suggested Records on Ancestry.com provided more records, including a death certificate for a child, a social security application entry for a child, a Find A Grave memorial, a daughter's marriage record that provided her maiden name, and other census records.  There was similar material for John Sever also.  It appears that Sever was the name they used throughout their lives.

Mary (Jaksa) Sever was born in 1882 in Poland.  She married John Sever (1877-1938) in about 1911, and they had children:

*  August Rudolph Sever (1912-1989)
*  Aloysius A. Sever (1914-1932)
*  Frank Albert Sever (1916-1985), married 1944 Joan Berry (1924-2010)
*  John H. Sever (1918-????)
*  Joseph Paul Sever (1921-1978).
*  Mary Anne Sever (1924-2003), married 1950 Charles I. Alatis (1927-2012).

I am not related to any of these Sever/Seaver people - John and Mary (Jacksa) Sever were born in Austria and/or Poland.  However, now they are added to my RootsMagic family tree database.  I have more research to do for their profiles.

There are over 9,500 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and I hope that Mary was a devoted wife and mother to six children.  I am glad that I can honor Mary (Jaksa) Sever today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.

  1. I am the daughter of Johan Sever. My birth name is Donna Marie Sever. He was born November 22,1917 and died April 16, 1981 in San Francisco. Cal. He was a San Francisco Bay bar Pilot. The Sever cemetery plots are located in Saint Clair PA. and the same family has the head sones spelled Seaver, Seever, and Sever. i think it was WW2 that got them to use the same spelling. In 2004 I visited the Jaksa relatives and they lived in Ljubljana and Semic Slovenia and the Severs were from thre Vipara area of Slovenia. at the time that the first John and Mary were born they were under the Austrian flag so the immigration papers say Austria.

    So are you related to the Jaksa side of the family. when i was in slovenia we stopped at the auto fixit shop where the sign said Jaksa auto repair. They sent us to Karla's house where we were welcomed in. lovely time. you may email me at donnasever@sbcglobal.net it I can help you in any other way.
    Donna
