Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- How Many Children/Grandchildren in Your Birth Surname Line?

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment, should you decide to accept it (you ARE reading this, so I assume that you really want to play along - cue the Mission Impossible music!):

1)  Consider your Birth Surname families - the ones from your father back through his father all the way back to the first of that surname in your family group sheets or genealogy database.  List the father's name, and lifespan years.

2)  Use your paper charts or genealogy software program to create a Descendants chart (dropline or graphical) that provide the children and their children (i.e., up to the grandchildren of each father in the surname list).

3)  Count how many children they had (with all spouses), and the children of those children in your records and/or database.  Add those numbers to the list.  See my example below!  [Note: Do not count the spouses of the children]

4)  What does this list of children and grandchildren tell you about these persons in your birth surname line?  Does this task indicate areas that you need to do more research to fill out families and find potential cousins?

5)  Tell us about it in your own blog post, or in a comment to this post, or in a comment on Facebook.  Be sure to provide a link to your post in a comment to this post.

Here's mine:

a)  My SEAVER surname line is:

*  Robert Seaver (1608-1683) had 7 children and 34 grandchildren.
*  Shubael Seaver (1639-1730) had 6 children and 20 grandchildren
*  Joseph Seaver (1672-1754) had 6 children and 48 grandchildren
*  Robert Seaver (1702-1752) had 9 children and 40 grandchildren
*  Norman Seaver (1734-1787) had 13 children and 48 grandchildren
*  Benjamin Seaver (1757-1816) had 10 children and 42 grandchildren
*  Benjamin Seaver (1791-1825) had 4 children and 9 grandchildren
*  Isaac Seaver (1823-1901) had 5 children and 8 grandchildren
*  Frank Walton Seaver (1852-1922) had 3 children and 7 grandchildren
*  Frederick Walton Seaver (1876-1942) had 7 children and 11 grandchildren
*  Frederick Walton Seaver (1911-1983) had 3 children and 6 grandchildren.

b)  I did this task by doing a 6-generation dropline Descendant List in RootsMagic 7 (Reports > Lists > Descendant List) and counting the children (generation 2) and grandchildren (generation 3) for each person.  Here's the first page for Benjamin Seaver (1757-1816):

c)  The list above tells me several things:

*  The first six generations on the list had 51 children, so 8.4 children on average.  The last five generations on the list had 22 children, so 4.4 children on average.
*  The 11 generations above had 73 children (average of 6.6), and 273 grandchildren (average of 24.8).
*  The number of children started reducing in the early 1800s for some reason - perhaps for reasons that are social, economic,  religious, distraction, or relative fertility).  All of my Seaver families worshipped as Protestant Christians.
*  A father who dies in his wife's child-bearing years really reduces the numbers (only Benjamin Seaver 1791 really has this problem).  Early deaths of children in childhood or before marriage reduces the numbers of potential grandchildren.
*  Once the families moved off the farm for a town or city, the number of children is reduced. (Isaac Seaver 1823 was the first one to not work as a farmer or to live in a place larger than a village of hundreds of people).
*  I think that I have captured all of the children and grandchildren of each of these fathers in my research and genealogy database.  There were some of the grandchildren on the lists (especially the children of female children) where I did not have death dates, spouse names or marriage dates.  That creates research opportunities to add to my genealogy database.

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, provides this list to me from a program he wrote that compares the current FamilySearch record collections list to the previous week's list.

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Findmypast Friday: Millions of New and Exclusive Irish Court Records

I received this from Findmypast this morning:

============================================

Findmypast publish millions of new and exclusive Irish court records

This week’s Findmypast Friday features new court records that are essential for anyone exploring their Irish heritage. This includes over 2.3 million bill books and court registers that are now available to search for the very first time, only at Findmypast.

These latest new additions join the largest collection of Irish family history records available online. Read on to find learn more about what's new this week.

Ireland, Court of Chancery Bill Books 1627-1884

Uncover family disputes and more in this vast collection of court records spanning over 250 years of Irish legal history.

Containing over 1.2 million new records from the National Archives of Ireland, each transcript will reveal the date and locations of proceedings as well as the names of those involved. Images will provide further information on your ancestors and their dealings with the court.

The Court of Chancery was an equity court of Ireland, presided over by the Lord Chancellor of Ireland. It existed until abolition as part of the 1877 reform of the court system and was based in Dublin.

The Lord Chancellor was originally considered to be "keeper of the king's conscience", charged with giving relief in any case where common law courts were unable to provide remedy, though over time it developed into a legal system of its own called 'Equity', that stood parallel to common law.

Ireland, Court of Exchequer Bill Books 1627-1884

Did your ancestor have their day in one of Ireland’s busiest courts? Delve into over a million new transcripts and images to find out.

The Court of Exchequer was one of the senior courts of law in Ireland (one of the four royal courts of justice), and served as a mirror of the equivalent court in England, dealing with matters of equity.

As one of Ireland's most senior courts, it mainly dealt with cases concerning equity. As such, you'll find the records full of land holders, business owners, merchants, professionals and farmers with large estates.

Ireland, Petty Sessions Court Registers

Over 62,000 new court records from Donegal County Archives have been added to this important Irish collection.

Digitised and published online for the first time, these new additions cover the courts of Ballyshannon and Newtowncunningham between 1828 and 1855. Often nicknamed 'the forgotten county', Donegal is underrepresented when it comes to genealogical sources, so this latest release could be key for taking your family tree research further.

The Petty Sessions handled the bulk of lesser legal cases, both criminal and civil. The entire collection now contains over 22 million records, making them an essential resource for those with Irish roots.

Each record includes both a transcript and image of the original document. The information contained varies considerably but most transcripts will provide your ancestors name, address, court dates and whether they were a witness, complainant and defendant. Images often provide a great deal of additional information including details of the offence, verdict and sentencing.

Proceedings were usually covered by the local press so searching Findmypast’s unrivalled collection of Irish newspapers may help you uncover the full story.

Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway Census & Population Lists 1792-1821

Discover Scottish ancestors, their birth years and addresses in these early local census documents from Annan and Balmaclellan.

On Findmypast, you'll also find early Scottish census fragments from Ayrshire, Edinburgh, Midlothian and beyond.

Newspapers

This week’s newspaper update includes three new titles as well as updates to six others. Brand new this week are:
