Genealogy Pot-Pourri - Week Ending 4 July 2022

As many readers know, I went in for an angiogram on 26 May, and had a quadruple coronary artery bypass graft operation on 30 May.  I came home the night of 7 June, so I have another 2-4 weeks of recovery to go.  My time on the desktop computer has been limited.

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past four weeks.

1)  Watched several YouTube videos and also a Family Tree Webinar - Top 10 Secrets to Using MyHeritage by Daniel Horowitz.

2)  Attended the Chula Vista Genealogical Society picnic at Daryl's house on Wednesday.  There were 20 people in attendance, with barbecue food and lots of sharing.  I haven't seen most of these people in person since before COVID.

3)  Published a genealogy biography in  for the 52 Ancestors series for 7th great-grandfather  #706 Jonathan Thurston (1649-1740) of Little Compton, Rhode Island and Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

4) Transcribed a probate record document - 1869 Administrator's Petition for Probate of Estate of Emily M.L. Seaver in Middlesex County, Massachusetts - for the Amanuensis Monday series.

5)  After getting home from the hospital, I made a GEDCOM for descendants of 4th great-grandfather John Kemp (1768-1864) and uploaded it to WikiTree.  I then had to match the profiles in the GEDCOM with profiles already in WikiTree.  I am in the process of ADDing those profiles not previously in WikiTree.  It is slow going because you have to have at least one source citation in the profile to add the profile to WikiTree.  About 10% of the profiles had no sources, so I have to search to find a source and add it to the WikiTree profile.  I am about 25% through this list now.

6)  Reviewed the latest NEHGR (Spring 2022) issue, read the Willis English ancestry article, and started entering information into my RootsMagic tree.

7) AncestryDNA now has 40,427 DNA matches (up 22 from 27 June) for me today, with no new ThruLines. MyHeritageDNA now has 10,511 DNA matches (up 40 from 27 June) for me, with two new Theories. Reviewed the new DNA matches on AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, FamilyTreeDNA and 23andMe.

8)  There was one session working in the RootsMagic software program to match with and update FamilySearch Family Tree profiles for Seaver families and my ancestral families, with occasional additions to the RootsMagic profiles. I have matched 48,105 of my RootsMagic persons with FamilySearch Family Tree profiles (up 8).

9) Used Web Hints and Record Matches from Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast and FamilySearch to add content and source citations to my RootsMagic profiles. I now have 69,675 persons in my RootsMagic file (up 12 from 27 June), and 145,114 source citations (up 34). I TreeShared 40 new or modified profiles with my Ancestry Member Tree, and I resolved 564  Ancestry Hints. My current Ancestry Member Tree has Ancestry Record Hints with 25,269 to be resolved, but I work on them several times a week.

10) Wrote 15 Genea-Musings blog posts last week (Sunday through Saturday), of which three were a press release. The most viewed post last week was
RootsMagic Family Tree Software Updated to Version 8.2.0 with over 370 views.

11)  This is week 121 since COVID restrictions.  Since I've been home, My Sharp Home Health nurses and physical therapy visits ended this past week. Linda is at a memory care and skilled nursing facility in Chula Vista 7 miles from home and I visited her four times last week.  My brother-in-law, Paul and his wife Debra, visited from Thursday to Saturday and really helped with yard and house work.  I went shopping on Thursday.  I am still really tired every day, take at least two naps each day, and try to walk for 30 minutes every day on the block.   I was told to get off the desktop computer and spend more time in my recliner to get my feet off the ground.  I watched the Padres games every day  and we are now 46-35 on the season (2-4 last week). I can't drive for another 2-4 weeks, and have upcoming doctor, nurse and therapy appointments.  Friends are driving me to go to the doctor appointments and Linda's facility.

I enjoy your blog. You wrote: "I was told to get off the desktop computer and spend more time in my recliner to get my feet off the ground." See if you have room under your desk for a tall footstool that is as high as your chair seat. You might already have something around the house that will work and fit under your desk.

I had to teach long hours on the computer because of Covid. I’ve tried the recliner with a multitude of lap desks. I couldn’t find anything that really worked, because I could never get the screen high enough to read without looking down (which is hard on my neck) while keeping the keyboard low enough to type comfortably. Also I much prefer to use the large screen of my desktop computer over a laptop. Instead of a desk to hold my monitor, I put my monitor on an Ikea Kallax bookshelf (the 2 squares by 2 squares unit) which runs about $45 to $50 dollars. Sometimes I just put the keyboard in my lap, and sometimes put it on the Ikea VITTSJÖ desk ($55) which I set in front of the Kallax bookshelf. Hope that helps.

I'm sorry to hear about Linda.
