Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - A Place Line

Hey there, genea-folks, it's Saturday Night - time for more Genealogy Fun!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to:

1) Do a Place Line. We're all familiar with Timelines - date, location, event, etc. I want you to create a Place Line for your life, or for the life of one of your parents or grandparents - your choice! In that Place Line, tell us the location (address if possible), inclusive dates (if possible), and events. Consider topics like residence, schools, churches, employment, etc.

2) Tell us about it in a blog post, in a comment on this blog post, or in a post on Facebook.

Why do this? Often it is the Places that we remember most, and family stories flow from those memories.

I'm recovering from Grandpa Camp right now, so I'll post a separate blog tonight for my Place Line.

  1. Randy,

Your challenge is about two weeks too early. I have really been struggling on this topic for my Grandfather. It's not that I don't know where he was and when (almost), but I am trying to figure out WHY was he there. Am planning on a visit to a Library in the county where he lived at one point in his life, as they have Maps. If they have Maps, then I can find a couple of names. I am guessing that when I have some good information there, I'll be able to find out how he ended up in Brewster, NY after living in Pennsylvania earlier in his life. I know exactly when he left, know where the place is today, but no information on the place.

    Thank you for the question.

Your Grandparents camp really sounded exciting. Been keeping up with your FB posts.

    Thanks again,

    Russ

  2. I started breathing in a hospital on the southside of Chgo in 1951, which has long since been torn down. A couple of years later I went to live on 55th St, I believe near Racine Ave. From there to a 3 bedrm, 2 story Georgian house on 75th St which is where I have my first childhood memory. I stayed there until I got married in 1973. I understand from neighbors who I went to school with that I may have been the last one married in the church of our neighborhood. (no proof to that-gg) My hubby and I moved into a 1 bedrm apt above a shopping strip in Chgo Ridge on 101St. In 1974 we moved to our first home, a 4 bedrm ranch in Batavia, IL. We stayed there through the birth of my 3 girls, 2 now living and loss of my hubby (1992) until 2000. By then the 2 girls and I moved to our Georgetown condo on the west side of town. We stayed there until my one daughter and I made the move to our second home, in the northeastern northwoods of WI in 2004. It definitely is a different speed of lifestyle, slower than what we are used to being in a metro area for most of our lives. We’re now 45 min’s to a Walmart, more than an hour to ANY major mall-Barnes/Nobles or Starbuck, or a major medical facility.
It’s not only all of the places where we lived in IL, it’s what did we did while we were there as well. I can follow a lot of it through the thousands of photo’s I took daily covering many events as a news editor/publisher, Mom, and adopted Mom to many. I am still a news editor/publisher today and an ‘adopted’ Mom to many here in WI.

  3. Spencer Hospital in Meadville, PA (my Dad's home state), was my birthplace. My parents lived in Blooming Valley, not far away. Barely a year later, my family moved to my mother's birthplace, Colma, CA.
Mom's parents weren't doing well, and we moved so that we could be closer to them.
My parents soon bought a place of our own in Daly City, just a short hop away from Colma.
Then when I was about 9 years old, we moved back to PA, to a 113-acre farm in Cochranton. Gosh, I loved that farm (the haymaking and fence row cleaning ... not so much).
Once I graduated from high school, Indiana, PA became my home for 3.5 years while I reveled in college studies and life.
One of my summers in college was taken up by an intership in Mercy Douglass Hospital in Philadelpia. It's not there anymore, but my memories are.
After graduation an apartment in Blairsville, PA was next on my list of residences, a place to hang my hat when I wasn't working at the state hospital nearby.
Then the big city called. The Washington, D.C. area became home from almost 25 years. I lived for a time in Arlington, VA, but spent most of those years living in Greenbelt and Bowie, MD. My work was in the high-rent district of downtown D.C., and was always an adventure.
My husband then took a job at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH, and brought us here about 12 years ago.
Our retirement destination is northwestern Wisconsin, in the woodlands surrounding Black Oak Lake. Sigh. Only 5 more years to go.

Thanks, Randy, for your blog. I enjoy it thoroughly!
