52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks - Week 65: #72 Zachariah Hildreth (1754-1820)

Amy Johnson Crow suggested a weekly blog theme of "52 Ancestors" in her blog post Challenge:  52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks on the No Story Too Small blog.  I am extending this theme in 2015 to 104 Ancestors in 104 Weeks. Here is my ancestor biography for week #65:

Zachariah Hildreth (1754- ca 1820)  is #72 on my Ahnentafel list, my 4th great-grandfather. He married in 1777 to #73 Elizabeth Keyes (1759-1793).

I am descended through:

*  their son #36 Zachariah Hildreth (1783-1857), who married # 37 Hannah Sawtell (1789-1857) in 1810.

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

 The birth record of Zachariah Hildreth, son of Zachariah and Elizabeth (Prescott) Hildreth, in the Westford town records book says:[1-2]

"Zachariah Hildreth, son of Zachariah Hildreth and Elizabeth his wife was born January ye 13th 1754."

There are three entries in the Massachusetts Sailors and Soldiers in the Revolutionary War book[7]:

*  Hildreth, Zachariah, Boston.  List of men mustered by Nathaniel Barber, Muster   Master for Suffolk Co., dated Boston, June 8, 1777;  Capt. Langdon's Co., Henry Jackson's Regt.

*  Hildreth, Zachariah.  2d Lieutenant, Capt. Zachariah Wright's 8th (2d Westford) co., 6th Middlesex Co. regt. of Mass. militia; list of officers chosen by the several companies in said regiment, as returned by Jonathan Reed and others, field officers; ordered in Council, April 24, 1776, that said officers be commissioned; reported commissioned April 24, 1776.

*  Hildreth, Zachariah.  corporal, Capt. Isaac Wood's co., Col. Jonathan Reed's regt. of guards; joined April 1, 1778; service, 3 mos. 4 days, at Cambridge; enlistment, 3 months from April 1, 1778; also, same co. and regt.; muster rolls dated Cambridge, May 9, and June 1, 1778; enlisted March 31, 1778.

There was a Zachariah Hildreth who resided in Boston who is probably the man with the first entry.  There are several muster rolls available for this Sergeant Zachariah Hildreth in Colonel Henry Jackson's Regiment.

A Sons of the American Revolution application for George Henry Woolley (dated 1922)[8] claims that Zachariah Hildreth (1754-1829) was a 2nd Lieutenant of Capt. Zach. Wright's Company of the Middlesex 6th Regiment.

This is the same information in the Daughters of the American Revolution for the application of several DAR members - Zachariah is Ancestor # A055571.  His service description is[9]:

Service:  MASSACHUSETTS
Rank: SECOND LIEUTENANT
Birth:  1754    WESTFORD MIDDLESEX CO MASSACHUSETTS
Death:  3-17-1829     TOWNSEND MIDDLESEX CO MASSACHUSETTS
Service Description:  1) SECOND WESTFORD REGT

Another Sons of the American Revolution application, by Samuel Hildreth Emerson,  claims the same service for Zachariah's father, Zachariah Hildreth (1728-1784) of Westford, Massachusetts.

I think that the third entry in the Soldiers and Sailors book is Zachariah Hildreth (1754-1820) rather than the second entry.  I think that this is much more likely - that a 48 year old man would serve as an Officer rather than a 22 year old man.

The marriage record of Zachariah Hildreth and Elizabeth Keyes in the Townsend, Massachusetts town record book says[5]:

"Sept 1 [1777]  Zachariah Hildreth with Elizabeth Keys both of Westford."

The listing in the Westford Vital Records book says[3,4,6]:

"[HILDRETH] Zachariah [jr. int.], and elizabeth Keyes, at Townsend, Sept. 1, 1777*"

The list of the children of Zachariah Hildreth was in the Townsend, Massachusetts town records[10]:

Aaron son of Zachriah & Elisabeth Hildreth born Oct 30th 1778
Betsy daughter of Do born June 4th 1780
Hannah daughter of Do born September 10th 1782
Zachriah son of Do born April 10th 1783
Lucy daughter of Do born July 18th 1785
Patty daughter of Do born May 16th 1787
Fanney daughter of Do born Augt 22d 1789
Nabby daughter of Do born April 16th 1791
James son of Do born July 17th 1793

In 1786, during the Shays Rebellion in Massachusetts, a number of men in Townsend were listed as sympathizers, and about 30 of them marched to Concord from Townsend under Lieutenant Peter Underwood.  Zachery Hildreth is on the list.  The History of Middlesex County, Massachusetts book describes the action[13].

In the 1790 U.S. Census, the Zach Hildreth family resided in Townsend, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  The household included[12]:

*   two males under age 16,
*  two males over age 16,
*  seven females.

The book, Biographical Encyclopaedia of Massachusetts of the Nineteenth Century, states[11]

"Zachariah Hildreth was a farmer, a cooper, and a military man, who was  elected Captain of the militia in 1790, and held that office until 1796."

Elizabeth Keyes died on 6 August 1793 in Townsend.  Zachariah married his second wife, Abigail "Nabby" Hart, on 24 March 1794.  The intentions to marry for Zachariah Hildreth and Nabby Heart are in the Townsend Vital Records book.  The record says[21]:

"March 8th 1794 Rec^d the Names of Cap^t Zech^r Hildreth and Nabby
Heart both of Townsend with their intentions of Marriage
24th gave a Certificate."

A family story noted that Abigail had been residing with Zachariah's family at the time Elizabeth died.  They had eight children born in Townsend between 1795 and 1808.  All of their births were recorded in the Townsend, Massachusetts town record book and Vital Record book[10]:

Nabby daughter of Zachariah & Nabby Hildreth born Feb 27th 1795
James son of Do born July 23d 1798
Joseph son of Do born April 2d 1800
Mary daughter of Do born Augt 17th 1801
Stow son of Do born April 17th 1803
Elisabeth daughter of Do born Augt 4th 1804
John son of Do born April 4th 1806
Levi son of Do born May 8th 1808

Zachariah Hildreth is on the Massachusetts and Maine 1798 Direct Tax List residing in Townsend, Massachusetts.  The information for his listing in the Dwelling House section includes[18]

*  Names of Occupants or Possessors:  Zachar. Hildrith
*  Names of reputed owners:  Hildrith Zachariah

*  Number of Houses Exempted from Valuation:  0
*  Number of Dwelling Houses &c included in the valuation:  1 dwelling house,
*  Quantity of land:  80 perches
*  Valuation determined by principal assessors:  200 Dollars
*  Valuation as revised and equalized by the commissioners:  220 Dollars

Another entry in the same volume for Land, Lots, Buildings and Wharves has this information[14]:

*  Names of Occupants or Possessors:  Zachariah Hildreth
*  Names of reputed owners:  Hildrith Zachariah
*  Town:  Townsend
*  Number of Houses Exempted from Valuation:  0
*  Number of Dwelling Houses &c included in the valuation:  0

*  Valuation as revised and equalized by the commissioners:  1221; 121; 33 Dollars

In the 1800 U.S. Census, the Zach Hildreth family resided in Townsend, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  The household included[19]:

*   one male under age 10,
*  one male aged 10-16,
*  two males aged 16-26,
*  one male over age 45,
*  three females age 10-16,
*  one female aged 16-26,
*  one female aged 26-45.

In the 1810 U.S. Census, the Zachariah Hildreth family resided in Townsend, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  The household included[15]:

*   three males under age 10,
*  one male aged 10-16,
*  one male aged 26-45,
*  one male over age 45,
*  two females under age 10,
*  one female aged 16-26,
*  one female aged 26-45.

In the 1820 US Census, the Zacheus Hildreth family resided in Townsend, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  The household included[20]:

*   two males aged 10-16,
*  1 male aged 16 to 18,
*  one male aged 16-26,
*  one male aged over 45,
*  two females aged 16 to 26,
*  one female aged over 45.

The Sons of the American Revolution application for George Woolley states that Zachariah Hildreth died 17 March 1829 in Townsend[8].  However, the Townsend Vital Record book gives the date as 1819 in the burial records[21].  "Zacheus" Hildreth was enumerated in the 1820 U.S. Census as a male over age 45[20].  There is no conclusive information about his death date.

He is buried in New Cemetery in Townsend.  The Townsend Vital Record book, under New Cemetery, states[21]:

"Pratt, Benanuel, & Zachariah Hildreth, 1819 (S.A.R. marker)"

No probate records were found for Zachariah Hildreth in the Middlesex County, Massachusetts probate records.
