Best of the Genea-Blogs - 19 to 25 April 2015

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Pinocchio: Records Don't Lie (Or Do They?) by Granny on the Granny's Trail blog.  Very funny...and some lessons too.

*  Brighton's New Family Revealed by Michael Lacopo on the Hoosier Daddy blog.  The next installment on Micheal's search for his grandfather.

*  My Bio Family:  My Ethnicity Estimates on AncestryDNA vs. FamilyTreeDNA by Colleen Greene on the Colleen & Jeff's Roots blog.  Colleen shares her adoption letter, and compares her autosomal DNA ethnicity estimates on AncestryDNA and FTDNA.

*  Bit by Bit and In Case of Outlaws by Jacqi Stevens on A Family Tapestry blog.  Jacqi made some progress on her Lasko study by using historical newspapers.  Bit by bit works!

*  WDYTYA? Live 2015 at Birmingham by Sue Adams on the Worldwide Genealogy ~ A Genealogical Collaboration blog.  Sue and her aunt Dorothy enjoyed WDYTYA? Live at Birmingham.

*  Find Your Cousins With Puzzilla and Puzzilla Premium - Pat One by James Tanner on the Rejoice and be Exceedling Glad blog.  James describes the premium features of Puzzilla, which I find very useful to find descendants of my ancestors.

*  RIP:  Constance "Connie" (Ufkes) Neill, 1942-2015 by Michael John Neill on the Rootdig.com blog.  Michael's mother was a "lucky duck" - and so was her family.

*  Your 7 Basic Rules For Identifying Sources.  Just 7 by Elizabeth Shown Mills on the Evidence Explained Quicktips blog.  We should all try to follow these rules.

*  Being an Actor and Filing a Record by Dave McDonald on the Thinking Genealogically blog.  Dave is also a pastor, officiates at weddings and files marriage records.

*  To NERGC and Back Again: Thank You Volunteers! by June Butka on Dame Gussie's Genealogy Rants blog.  June went to NERGC and had a great time.

*  Family History Detective: 3 Pro Tactics for Finding and Using Obituaries by Alison J. Herzog on the FamilySearch Blog.  D. Joshua Taylor, Diane Haddad and Thomas MacEntee have advice about obituaries.

*  Deleting the Family Tree:  When Ancestry.com Shuttered its Social Network for Relatives, It Erased 10 Years worth of My Family's correspondence and Memories by Jon Christian on the Future Tense tab on Slate.com.  Jon's story is that of many MyFamily users.  Sad.  A black eye for Ancestry.com.

*  Family History Library: Crushed by a Waterfall of Knowledge by Heather Collins on the Young & Savvy Genealogists blog.  Heather describes her day at the FHL.  There are lessons learned here.

*  Navigate Local Town Hall Research by Marian Pierre-Louis on the Legacy News blog.  Marian has excellent suggestions for researching at a local repository.

*  Dear Ben... by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy's letter to Ben Affleck describes how we should deal with slaveowning ancestors.

*  BCG Webinars Now Available Online by Angela McGhee on the Adventures in Genealogy Education blog.  Angela lists the six free webinars available from the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG).

*  Who Do You Think You Are? Live 2015 in Birmingham by Debbie Kennett on the Cruwys News blog.  Debbie recaps her WDYTYA? Live conference experiences, and provides a blog compendium too.

*  Moose Dung and Ancestral Graves by Lee Drew on the Lineagekeeper's Genealogy Blog.  This is a fascinating story...

Here are pick posts by other geneabloggers this week:

*  GAGs - GeniAus Gems - 24 April 2015 b y Jill Ball on the GeniAus blog.

*  Genealogy News, April 18th - 24th by Nichelle Barra on the Copper Leaf Genealogy blog.

*  Friday Finds - 04/24/15 by Julie Cahill Tarr on Julie's Genealogy & History Hub blog.

*  This Week's Creme de la Creme -- April 25, 2015 by Gail Dever on the Genealogy a la Carte blog.

*  Noteworthy Reads #11 by Jo Henn on the Climbing My Family Tree blog.

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1560 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
