Best of the Genea-Blogs - 1 to 7 July 2018

Dozens of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Gettysburg Day 1 & My William Henry Phillips by Pat Richley-Erickson on the Myrt's Musings blog.

*  The Confusing Maze of Genealogy Mixups in Names by Lorine McGinnis Schulze on the Olive Tree Genealogy Blog.

*  UNUSUAL ANCESTOR NAMES ~ How Many Are in Your Family Tree? Where Did They Originate? by Diane Gould Hall on the Michigan Family Trails blog.

Photos of the Revolutionary War Generation by Maureen Taylor on the Family Tree blog.

Are these new developments for the FamilySearch.org Family Tree? by James Tanner on the Rejoice, and be exceeding glad ... blog.

Online Sources Are Not Bad ... by Michael John Neill on the Genealogy Tip of the Day blog.

Are You Using LibGuides for Genealogical Research? by Gena Philibert-Ortega on the Legacy News blog.

3 Kinds of Newspapers Every Genealogist Should Know by Amy Johnson Crow on the Amy Johnson Crow blog.

*  An Interview With Curtis Rogers: The Man With the Idea that Sparked GEDmatch by Barbara Shoff on The Blundering DNA Genealogist blog.

*  How I Solved It: William Holloway, Martha Branson & Phebe Crispin: A genealogical game of hide and seek by Brian Sheffey, guest author on the RootsFinder Blog.

Here are pick posts by other geneabloggers this week:

*  Friday's Family History Finds by Linda Stufflebean on the Empty Branches on the Family Tree blog.

*  High Fives, June 29, 2018 by Dianne Nolin on the Genealogy: Beyond the BMD blog.

*  Friday Finds, 6 July 2018 by Lois Willis on the Lois Willis - Genealogy and Family History blog.

*  Friday Fossicking, 6th July 2018 by Crissouli on the That Moment in Time blog.

This Week's Creme de la Creme -- July 7, 2018 by Gail Dever on the Genealogy a la Carte blog.

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 900 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.

  1. Thanks for the mention Randy. I’m still surprised at finding those names, Philemon and Onesimus in record collections. Never mind the two you found. 😃
