Best of the Genea-Blogs - 12 to 18 August 2018

Dozens of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

Behold's Genetic Relationship Notation (BGRN) - Revised by Louis Kessler on the Louis Kessler's Behold Genealogy Blog.

Dealing With An Impasse in Research by Nancy Messier on the My Ancestors and Me blog.

Color Clustering: Working With "4th Cousins" and Top 25 Fourth Cousins by Dana Leeds on The Enthisiastic Genealogist blog.

The Differences Between a Genealogist and a Family Historian by Jen Thorpe on the FamilyTree.com blog.

A New Cousin: And a Reminder Lesson Surname Spelling by Wayne Shepheard on the Discover Genealogy blog.

What Genealogy Software Do You Use? by Michael John Neill on the Rootdig blog.

Why You Need to DNA Test Your Siblings by Ellen Thompson-Jennings on the Hound on the Hunt blog.

FamilySearch's Strategy to Help Preserve the World's Archives by a guest blogger on the FamilySearch Blog.

*  The Single Best Technique for Reading Old Genealogy Records: Immersion by DiAnn Iamarino on the Fortify Your Family Tree blog.

Finding an Elusive Death Date by Sam Williams on the Ancestral Anamnesis blog.

* 12 Keys to Properly Analyzing the Vitals Section of Historical Newspapers by Kenneth R. Marks on The Ancestor Hunt blog.

Here are pick posts by other geneabloggers this week:

*  Friday's Family History Finds by Linda Stufflebean on the Empty Branches on the Family Tree blog.

Friday Finds: Week 33 - 2018 by Martin Roe Eidhammer on the Norwegian Genealogy ... and then some blog.
*  Friday Fossicking, 17th August 2018 by Crissouli on the That Moment in Time blog.

This Week's Creme de la Creme -- August 18, 2018 by Gail Dever on the Genealogy a la Carte blog.

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 900 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.

  1. Thank you for including my post in your "Best of..." this week, Randy. It's always such a surprise when you include one of mine.
