Treasure Chest Tuesday -- 1908 Death Notice for Mary Ann (Paul) Schaffner in San Francisco, California

The treasure today is the 1908 death notice for Mary Ann (Paul) Schaffner in the San Francisco Call newspaper dated 19 February 1908:

The transcription of this death notice is:


"SCHAFFNER -- Entered into rest, in this city, February 18, 1908, Mary Ann (Paul) Schaffner, idolized wife of Herman Schaffner, loving mother of Paul F. Schaffner, Herman Schaffner Jr., and Fred Schaffner, and beloved sister of Mrs. R.M. Small, a native of New Bedford, Mass.

"The funeral will take place today (Wednesday), February 19, at 1 o'clock p.m., from her late residence, 1014 Castro street between Twenty-third and Elizabeth.  Interment Woodlawn cemetery, by electric funeral car from Thirtieth street and San Jose avenue."

Mary Ann Paul was born in November 1854 in Massachusetts, the first child and daughter of John Charles Paul and Maria T. Beamish.  She married Herman Schaffner (1851-1921) in about 1875 in San Francisco, California.  They had three sons, all named in the death notice.

Herman and Mary Ann (Paul) Schaffner are Linda's great-grandparents, whose son Paul F. Schaffner (1879-1934) married Edna Catherine McKnew (1884-1974) in 1906.
