Betty With Her Pets in About 1922 -- Post 566 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

An Auble cousin gifted me with a photograph album of her family several years ago which included quite a few photos of my grandmother, Emily Kemp (Auble) Carringer and her parents, Charles and Georgianna (Kemp) Auble.

Included in the photo album, created by Bessie (Auble) Pentecost in about 1930, was this intriguing photo:

This photograph is of my mother, Betty Virginia Carringer (1919-2002) holding the family cat (Buster?) with the family dog (Fritzie?) nearby in about 1922.  She appears to be age 2 or 3 in the photo. The setting may be the back yard at the Lyle Carringer home at 2130 Fern Street in San Diego, since I see the shadow on the wall of the building in the background - I think this is near the lath house in the back yard of the lot.  It may be winter since Betty has long pants under her dress, but she does have bare arms in the photo.  This photo was probably sent to the Pentecosts, perhaps at Christmas time in 1922 or 1923.

Several years ago, while doing Auble research, a descendant of Will and Bessie (Auble) Pentecost contacted me and offered the album to me, telling me that it had many photographs of the family of my grandparents (Lyle and Emily (Auble) Carringer).  I have kept the album intact in case she ever wants it back, but have digitized many of the photos of my Carringer and Auble families.

Unfortunately, there were no photographs of the parents of Charles Auble, David and Sarah (Knapp) Auble of Terre Haute, Indiana.

UPDATE:  Two readers have commented that the cat, Buster?, appears to be wearing glasses.  I missed that.  One reader indicated that Betty looks older than 2 or 3 years old, and I think I agree.  I have a school photo of her with this hair style, so it may be that she is 5 to 7 years old in the photo.  By that age, she was reading and, obviously, encouraging the cat to read.  Her grandmother, Della (Smith) Carringer, had eye glasses that look like the glasses on the cat.

  1. What a sweet photo, Randy. I don't know if you noticed but it looks like Buster is wearing little round glasses!

  2. Yes, we noticed the glasses as well. One of our cats was a reader also, as well as a hacker who could and did turn on the computer and find cat cartoons!
In regards to age - we would guess this little girl's age at 5 yrs, not 2 or 3. Similar dress and hairstyle to my own mother at 5-6 years old. Her features are well-formed and seem older than a 2-year-old. Great photo!
