Using Ancestry.com Search To Find a Maiden Name for Agnes (--?--) Seaver

I have hundreds of females in my RootsMagic family tree without a known maiden name.  Occasionally, I try to find a maiden name for one of them by searching from within my Ancestry Member Tree which is linked to my RootsMagic database..

Today's lucky female is Agnes J. --?--, the wife of Walter F. Seaver (1888-1970).  I knew from a census record that they had two children - Jane K. Seaver (born about 1921) and Walter F. Seaver, Jr., born in 1922, and married to a Virginia --?--.

Here is the family in my Ancestry Member Tree:

I prefer to search for records for a person using the "Search" button on the screen above (in the upper right-hand corner).  Using this search button, everything I know about the person is used by Ancestry - name, birth, death, marriage, parents, spouse, children, etc.) The search results were:

It looks like the top two results are for this Agnes J. Seaver since they are in St. Louis.  I clicked on the 1940 U.s. census entry and saw the indexed record summary with a number of "Suggested Records":

The first two "Suggested Records" say her name was Agnes J. Hogan.  I clicked on the U.S. Social Security Applications and Claims Index record, and saw:

This record is for the son, Walter Fred Seaver, Jr. and clicking on the son's name on the screen above I saw:

Walter Fred Seaver Jr.'s record says his parents are Walter F. Seaver and Agnes J. Hogan.

There was a similar record for their daughter, Jane Kathryn Seaver which named her mother as Agnes J. Hogan.  The Ancestry "Suggested Records" provided a birth register entry, a Find a Grave memorial, and several other records for Agnes J. (Hogan) Seaver.  Further research provided records for both children, including spouses.

Here is the updated Ancestry screen for Agnes J. (Hogan) Seaver:

Not all "problems" are solved this easy, but many can be with the plethora of useful records on Ancestry and other websites.

A gold mine of records found by searching for records for a woman with only a given name in my RootsMagic and Ancestry trees.  Welcome to the Seaver family tree, Agnes, Jane and Walter.

  1. are you related to this particular Seaver family? Walter and Agnes (Hogan) Seaver were my grandparents.
