It's Surname Saturday, and I'm "counting down" my Ancestral Name List each week.

I am working in the 9th great-grandmothers by Ahnentafel number, and I am up to Ancestor #2511 who is Elizabeth LNU (1625-????). [Note: the more recent ancestral families have been covered in earlier posts.]

2510.  John Smith, born before 21 January 1622 in Hadleigh, Suffolk, England; died 16 October 1672 in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts, United States.  He was the son of 5020. John Smyth and 5021. Alice Barnes.  He married about 1653 in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts, United States.
2511.  Elizabeth LNU, born about 1625 in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England; died in probably Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts, United States.

Children of John Smith and Elizabeth are:
*  John Smith (1654-1737), married 1679 Elizabeth Smith (1653-1736).
*  Elizabeth Smith (1656-1688), married 1682 William Chapman (1651-1732).
*  William Smith (1659-1676).
*  Thomas Smith (1661-1726), married (1) 1685 Joanna Barber (1667-1688); (2) 1689 Mary Younglove (1665-1743).
*  Mariah Smith (1664-1734), married 1684 Joseph Collins (1643-1724).
*  Ruth Smith (1666-1667).
*  Prudence Smith (1671-????).
*  Mary Smith (1671-????).

There is no authoritative source that provides Elizabeth's maiden name.  The FamilySearch Family Tree profile says her maiden name was Cooley, but the notes say that is not conclusive.  The Geni.com profile for John Smith says that Elizabeth was a Cooley.

One source for the John Smith family line is:

I have done no original research on this Smith line.
