Seavers in the News -- James Walter Seaver (1882-1945), a Spanish War Veteran, Dies in 1945 in Pocatello

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Deseret News [Salt Lake City, Utah] newspaper dated 8 January 1945:

The transcription of the article is:

"James W. Seaver
POCATELLO -- Funeral services for James W. Seaver, 62, retired Union Pacific engineer and Spanish War veteran, of 1516 North Garfield, were held today at 2 p.m. at the Downard chapel."

The source citation is:

"James W. Seaver,Deseret News [Salt Lake city, Utah] newspaper, death notice, Monday, 8 January 1945, page 8, column 6, James W. Seaver death notice;  Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 24 December 2020).

This death notice provides only an age, an approximate death date, and several life events. There is no mention of parents, a spouse, or children.

James Walter Seaver (1882-1945) was born on 7 March 1882 in Hillsdale, Kansas, the son of George Washington and Sarah Belle (Welch) Seaver.  He died 5 January 1945 in Pocatello, Idaho.  James married (1) Beatrice Chase (1883-????) on 20 July 1907 in Salt Lake County, Utah, and they had no children.  James married (2) Sarah Rose (Barfuss) Cready (1895-1956) on 4 April 1919 in Pocatello, Idaho.  Sarah had two children, Leona Elizabeth Cready (1915-1951) and Francis Henry Cready (1916-1976) with her first husband, Henry Bayless Cready (1886-1963).  Both Leona and Francis used the Seaver surname in some records after the 1920 census.

I found the application for a headstone for military veterans on Ancestry for James Walter Seaver.  He enlisted in the 20th Regiment of the Kansas Infantry on 14 June 1898, and was honorably discharged on 28 October 1899.  He received a pension for his service.   The headstone was to be shipped to Mrs. Sarah Seaver, 1516 N. Garfield in Pocatello.  James is buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Pocatello.

I am not related to James Walter Seaver since he is descended from Henry and Elizabeth (--?--) Seaver who migrated from Germany to Virginia in the 1760s.

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a death notice or an obituary does not provide full information about a person's life and relationships. I am glad that I can honor James Walter Seaver today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
