Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- What Memories Do You Have of Family Sickness or Deaths?

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music):

1)  What memories do you have of family sickness or death?  Tell us about one or more of them and how the family dealt with it.

2)  Tell us in your own blog post, in a comment to this blog post, or on Facebook.  Be sure to leave a comment with a link to your blog post on this post.

Here's mine:

The family members that I have memories of are my parents and my maternal grandparents, Linda's parents and maternal grandmother, and my mother's maternal grandmother.

Georgia (Kemp) Auble (1868-1952) was my mother's maternal grandmother, and she was in my life from the beginning, at least until my grandparents and Georgia moved to Point Loma in 1951.  Georgia fell and broke her hip, and died soon after at age 84.  I don't recall seeing her after she broke her hip.  My parents kept things like this hidden from us when we were children.

My maternal grandfather, Lyle Lawrence Carringer (1891-1976) was also significant in my life as a child and adult, and seemed so energetic and full of life in his early 80s, until the very end.  He had a cancer operation on his sinuses (I think) in the 1960s, but it was colon cancer that slowed him down after about 1974.  He went from the hospital to a nursing home at the end.  I visited him there and prayed with him - said The Lord's Prayer with him and he accepted Christ that day after a lifetime of unbelief.  In his hospital bed, he saw an imaginary window with birdies flitting about.  I think his was the first funeral that I attended in my life.  I loved this kind and smart and gentle man.

My maternal grandmother, Emily (Auble) Carringer (1899-1977) was also significant in my life as a child and adult.  She was overweight in the 1950s and early 60s, and had a stroke in them id-1960s.  I don't remember visiting her then.  She gradually had dementia symptoms from about 1970, but seemed fine until Lyle died in November 1976, when it got worse.  She wandered on the street at night in her nightgown occasionally, and the neighbors would call my parents, who then had to drive the 15 miles to put her back in the house and settle her down.  That happened so often that my father refused to drive my mother over to check on her and the house.  Linda and I took my mother and our two little girls over to visit her on Saturdays near the end, and she loved seeing the girls and talking to them (although it was pretty one way!).  On the last visit on 19 June 1977, we found her on the floor having had another stroke, called the ambulance, and she died that night in the hospital.  It was her 59th wedding anniversary.  I never got to say goodbye to this very important person in my life (and I just teared up remembering it).  I thank God for her life and her love for our family and her positive outlook on life.

Maybe I will write more about my parents deaths at another time.

  2. I wrote about my great grandfather's funeral a few years ago. If I could re-live one day over again for genealogical purposes, it would be that day. The room was shoulder-to-shoulder with family I saw only that day and never again. I was 11 or 12 years old. Here's the story of Hiram Dunbar (Hi to his friends.)
