Carringers in the News -- A.S. Carringer Dies in 1903 in Colorado

 It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Denver  [Colo.] Post newspaper dated 4 January 1903:

The transcription of this article is:

"A.S. Carringer Killed by Premature Shot

Empire, Colo., Jan. 3 -- The badly mangled body of A.S. Carringer was found this afternoon in an adlt level of the McKinley mine, Lincoln mountain, about three miles from Empire.  A premature shot had evidently caused death.  Deceased was about 66 years of age, and leaves two sons, Frank Carringer, representative from Jefferson County in the last legislature, and Fred Carringer, an officer of the People's bank at Denver.  Coroner Tratken viewed the remains, but deemed a formal inquest unnecessary."

The source citation is:

"A.S. Carringer Killed by Premature Shot," The Denver [Colo.] Post newspaper, obituary, Sunday, 4 January 1903, page 12, column 2, A.S. Carringer obituary;   GenealogyBank.com  (https://www.genealogybank.com : accessed 23 August 2021).

This obituary provides a death date and place, an age, the names of two sons, and a presumed cause of death.  The "premature shot" was probably a mine explosion.  I did not have a death date for A.S. Carringer before finding this obituary.

Anthony Spangler Carringer (1837-1903) was born in May 1837 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph and Anna Maria (Spangler) Carringer.  He married in July 1858 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania to Maria Moyer (1837-1918).  They had six children:

*  Franklin Eugene Carringer (1859-1946), married (1) 1915 Ethel G. England (1880-1919), (2) 1930 Florence E. McEnery (1875-????).
*  William Effinger Carringer (1860-1926), married 1884 Huldah Jane Crawford (1861-1932).
*  Charles Herbert Carringer (1865-1951), married 1894 Grace Darley (1870-1945).
*  Lilla Annetta Carringer (1868-1924), married 1894 Samuel Gibson Findley (1870-1948).
*  Harry Martin Carringer (1872-1960), married (1) 1903 Minnie C. Liskey (1872-1950), (2) Della Kiser (1885-1969).
*  Frederick Willard Carringer (1876-1965), married 1898 Elizabeth A. "Daisy" Olds (1876-1950).

I am a 1st cousin three times removed to Anthony Spangler Carringer.  Our common ancestors are my 4th great-grandparents Martin Carringer (1758-1835) and Maria Magdalena Hoax (1768-1851).

There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person dies unexpectedly in an accident. I am glad that I can honor Anthony Spangler Carringer today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
