Carringers in the News -- Mrs. Hannah C. Carringer Dies in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1922

  It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the The Gazette [Cedar Rapids, Iowa] newspaper dated 25 April 1922:

The transcription of this article is:

"Mrs. Hannah C. Carringer
"Mrs. Hannah C. Carringer died at the home of her son, William V., 1517 Third avenue, at 5 a.m. today.  She was born April 2, 1848 and has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Carringer only a short time, coming here from Boone.  She is survived by one son, William V. of this city.  Funeral services will be held in the Carringer residence, 1517 Third avenue, at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday conducted by Rev. A.M. Jayne.  The body will be taken to Boone of services and burial."

"Mrs. Hannah C. Carringer," The Gazette [Cedar Rids, Iowa] newspaper, obituary, Tuesday, 25 April 1922, page 17, column 4, Hannah C. Carringer obituary;  Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 2 August 2021).

This obituary provides a birth date but no place, a death date and place, a child's name, but little information about her associations, and nothing about grandchildren.

Hannah C. Tomlinson was born 2 April 1848 in Madison county, Ohio, the daughter of Vincent C. and Elizabeth (Bethards) Tomlinson.  She married George C. Carringer (1839-1887), on 13 March 1867 in Nevada, Story County, Iowa.  They had two children:

*  Elizabeth L. "Lizzie Lou" Carringer (1869-1882).
*  William Vincent Carringer (1869-1957), married 1891 Mary Maud Weaver (1870-1932).

I am a second cousin two times removed to William Vincent Carringer.  Our common ancestors are my 4th great-grandparents Martin Carringer (1758-1835) and Maria Magdalena Hoax (1768-1851).

There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person was widowed early in life and had a limited obituary.  I am glad that I can honor Hannah C. (Tomlinson) Carringer today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
