Carringers in the News -- Ralph R. Carringer Marries Evelyn Stokes in 1948 in Cedar Rapids

It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Gazette [Cedar Rapids, Iowa] newspaper dated 10 March 1948:

The transcription of this article is:

"Evelyn Stokes Married to Ralph R. Carringer

"Miss Evelyn Stokes became the bride of Ralph Richard Carringer Thursday in a ceremony read at 8 p.m. in the chapel of St. Paul's Methodist Church. The Rev. M. B. Kober officiated.

"The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Stokes of foss, Okla., and the bridegroom. formerly of Cedar Rapids, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.T. Carringer of Oklahoma City, Okla.

"The bride wore a powder blue suit with black accessories and a corsage of white orchids.

"Mrs. Ralph Anderson served as matron of Honor and Ralph Anderson as best man.

"A reception was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, 625 Fifth avenue SE.  After a brief honeymoon the couple will make their home in Oklahoma City, where the bridegroom is attending the University of Oklahoma."

Ralph richard Carringer (1926-1993) was born 5 September 1926 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Clinton Tomlinson and Bernice Olivia (Rooks) Carringer.  He died 26 September 1993 in Edmond, Oklahoma.  Evelyn Della Stokes was born 23 March 1926 in Turkey, Arkansas, the daughter of Lema Ader and Esther Mae (Massey) Stokes.  She died 3 January 2009 in Edmond, Oklahoma.  The marriage date was estimated to be 4 March 1948 (the Thursday before 10 March 1948) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Ralph Richard Carringer is my 4th cousin 1x removed, with common ancestors of my 4th great-grandparents Martin and Magdalena (Hoax) Carringer.

There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them. Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a newspaper article tells us something about the bride and groom. I am glad that I can honor Ralph Richard Carringer and Evelyn Della Stokes today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
