Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Newspaper Headlines On Your Birth Date

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music):

1)
What was your own birth date?

2)  Find a newspaper from your hometown, or a nearby larger town or city, that was published on that date.  What was the major headline on page 1 of that issue of the newspaper?

3)  Share your headline with us in your own blog post, in a comment on this blog post, or in a Facebook post.

NOTE:  For those who don't have access to digital newspapers behind a subscription wall, find FREE digital newspapers using Kenneth Marks The Ancestor Hunt website at  -
https://theancestorhunt.com/newspapers.html

4)  Tell us in your own blog post, in a comment to this blog post, or on Facebook.  Be sure to leave a comment with a link to your blog post on this post.

Here's mine:

My birth date is 23 October 1943 in National City, California (a San Diego suburb).

I knew that GenealogyBank had San Diego newspapers for that time period, so I searched for page one of that edition of the San Diego Union newspaper and easily found it:

The top headlines are:

*  Jap Subs Reported Off Coast; Planes Destroy Jungle Defenses
*  Trainmen Turn Back Strike
*  Tax Structure Streamlined by House Group
*  Capitalist Dies in L.A. Hotel
*  Russians Slay 1500 Germans at Melitopol

And below the image above:

*  Super Flat Tops Loom
*  Americans Gain Four Miles In Push to Join Eighth Army
*  Berlin Charges Kidnapping Plot
*  Big Allied Convoy in Mediterranean
*  etc.

The page 1 news articles were half war related and half everything else - local, national and world.

There was a lot more news on page 1 in 1943 than there is in 2021!

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, provides this list to me from a program he wrote that compares the current FamilySearch record collections list to the previous week's list.

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

MyHeritage Improves their Online Family Tree

 Here is more information from Daniel Horowitz of MyHeritage:

=============================================

I’m pleased to announce that the most popular view for family trees on MyHeritage has been improved with a new design — making it easier than ever to navigate your family tree and make new discoveries.

It’s easy to get absorbed in family history research, and spend hours on the family tree. The new tree design, which is cleaner and more modern, helps improve the overall user experience and make discovering your family history easier and more enjoyable. We have added useful new features, and some nice touches.

The improvements also include a new Relationship diagram that enables you to visualize your relationship to other people in the family tree to easily understand how you are related.

Other enhancements include a revamped side panel with one-click buttons to view the Relationship diagram, view Smart Matches™, Record Matches, or DNA Matches for a person. You’ll also see if MyHeritage identified any inconsistencies in your tree. In addition, we’ve added more options that enable you to customize the display of your family tree.

Watch this video for a brief overview of what’s new, and read the blog post for the full details about the improvements to the online family tree.

Disclosure: I receive a complimentary subscription to MyHeritage, and gave received other material consideration in past years. I uploaded my autosomal DNA raw data to their DNA product. This does not affect my objective analysis of MyHeritage products.

Seavers in the News - Milo Seaver Dies in Waverly, New York in 1957

   It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This obituary provides the name, death date and place, spouse's name, siblings names and children names, plus limited information about his associations.

Milo G. Seaver (1904-1957) was born on 26 September 1904 in Allegany County, New York, the son of son of Jesse Bradley and Edna Phoebe (Brown) Seaver.  He married Mildred L. Holland (1908-1980) on 31 December 1925 in Binghamton, New York.  They had 10 children:

*   Harriet A. Seaver (1926-????), married 1948 James N. Keene (1926-1997).
*  Christine E. Seaver (1928-2020), married 1946 Herbert William Bogert (1924-????).
*  Donald D. Seaver (130-2015), married Evelyn Belle Burns (1931-2015).

*  Phyllis Seaver (1940-????) married George Francis Clark (1939-????).
*  Mary Ann Seaver (1941-1942)
*  Sharon Seaver (1943?-????).

I am a 6th cousin two times removed to Milo G. Seaver.  Our common Seaver ancestor is my 7th great-grandfather Joseph Seaver (1672-1754) of Framingham, Massachusetts.

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has many children. I am glad that I can honor Milo G. Seaver today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.

The marriage entry is  the 13th from the top and 14th from the bottom of the left-hand page:

The transcription of this record is:

"Edward Harington son of Robert & Susan Born the 2'd of March"

The source citation for this record is:

"Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988," indexed database and digital image, Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestry.com), Watertown, Births, Marriages and Deaths, page 62 (image 151 of 3991), Edward Harington birth entry, 2 March 1668/9.

This is an entry in a digitized handwritten Watertown town record book.  It is an Original Source with Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the birth of Edward Harington to Robert and Susan Harington on 2 March 1668/9.

Edward Harrington married Mary Ockington (1669-1725) in 1692 in Watertown, Massachusetts Bay Colony.  They had nine children between 1693 and 1711, all recorded in Watertown.

Edward and Mary (Ockington) Harrington  are my 7th great-grandparents, through their daughter Mary Harrington (1693-1774) who married  Joseph Grout (1683-1758) in 1717.

Ancestry.com and Your Ancestry Member Tree

 Like almost all genealogists, I have my family tree on Ancestry.com.  My tree profiles contain Photos (mainly for recent ancestors), Documents (some I paid for) and Notes (mainly general notes and fact notes for ancestors).  I have over 65,000 profiles in my Ancestry Member Tree which I synchronize every week with my master family tree kept in RootsMagic.  The purpose of the Photos, Documents  and Notes is to encourage sharing with other researchers  and I will continue to do so.

1)  Ancestry.com just changed their Terms and Conditions as of 3 August for user-created content (i.e., names, relationships, dates, places, facts, media, notes, etc.) - you can read them at   https://www.ancestry.com/cs/legal/termsandconditions.

2)  As is her wont and self-assigned task, The Legal Genealogist, Judy G. Russell, was on the ball and has analyzed the changes in https://www.legalgenealogist.com/2021/08/04/one-big-change-at-ancestry/Judy points out that as of 2 September, Ancestry.com can use ANY information you provide for any purpose they choose.  Her summary paragraph is:

"In plain English, the rights to use that family photo you posted, that story you wrote and uploaded, that snippet of family history you’ve shared basically now belong to Ancestry. You can continue to use it elsewhere if you wish, since you’re still technically the owner, but you can’t do anything to stop Ancestry from using it any way it wants, forever."

3)  Roberta Estes, on her DNAeXplained - Genetic Genealogy blog, has more comments and recommendations for researchers concerned about this in https://dna-explained.com/2021/08/04/clock-is-ticking-in-28-days-ancestry-can-do-anything-they-want-with-every-image-in-your-tree/ Roberta's takeaway is:

"If you want to remove anything currently uploaded, do it BEFORE September 2nd and DO NOT UPLOAD ANYTHING ELSE if you are not willing to allow Ancestry permanent unfettered ability to utilize your documents and images."

She also provides explicit directions on how to do this.

4)  My take on this is:

*  This is a BIG DOG in the genea-kennel move on the part of Ancestry.com.  They have a lot invested in all of the public and private Ancestry Member Trees.

*  It would be impossible for me to delete photos, documents and notes for my ancestral profiles and frankly would waste my time.  There are no priceless works of art or deathless prose in my tree, only Photos that I have in my family collections, Documents from my family collections, and Notes that I've written, transcribed or summarized based on my own research and what I've found in out-of-copyright works.  I am too old and there's too much water over the falls for me to butcher my Ancestry family tree.  I'm not going to waste my time on deleting anything.

*  Notes on tree profiles in my tree are hidden from viewing by other researchers (unless they are editors on my tree).  So be it, but they are still on the profiles and Ancestry.com can access it and use it if they wish to.  They are also in my RootsMagic database, and many are in my Genea-Musings blog posts.

*  Rather than delete photos and stories one-by-one, a determined Ancestry Member Tree user could delete their entire Ancestry Member Tree before 2 September.  Before they do that, they could create a GEDCOM file of their tree in their genealogy software - without photos and notes - and upload it as a NEW Ancestry tree.  The genealogy content (names, dates, relationships, places, events, facts, sources, etc.) would still be there but the content that users might want to protect will not be there.  The Hints would still be generated by Ancestry randomly, but the record attachments would have to be generated again.

*  Why would Ancestry.com do this?  What are they planning to use all of our data for?  Is there a BIG Ancestry World Family Tree (remember that?) in their future?  A BIG Ancestry World Family Tree would be a "NEW" public database that they could "sell" to subscribers.  The major challenge would be making a BIG tree editable with sources, and somehow moderating content for each profile.  We know that they use everybody's Ancestry Member Trees to find DNA "Common Ancestors," to suggest "Potential Ancestors" on trees and ThruLines, and they used some sort of BIG tree to support the "We're Related" mobile app in the past.  I wrote about this in https://www.geneamusings.com/2019/02/a-readers-take-on-ancestrycom-problems_13.html in February 2019 with help from a reader.

*  I think that this is a major unforced error on Ancestry.com's part.  This will antagonize some Ancestry subscribers and cost them subscriptions.  A significant number of photos, stories and notes will be deleted by users in the next month.  But it's their company and they can do what they want within legal and contract limits, including changing their Terms and Conditions.

5)  What do you think?  What will you do?

                          ==============================================

Disclosure: I have a complimentary all-access subscription from Ancestry.com, for which I am thankful. Ancestry.com has provided material considerations for travel expenses to meetings, and has hosted events and meals that I have attended in Salt Lake City, in past years.
