Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Newspaper Headlines On Your Birth Date

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music):

1)
What was your own birth date?

2)  Find a newspaper from your hometown, or a nearby larger town or city, that was published on that date.  What was the major headline on page 1 of that issue of the newspaper?

3)  Share your headline with us in your own blog post, in a comment on this blog post, or in a Facebook post.

NOTE:  For those who don't have access to digital newspapers behind a subscription wall, find FREE digital newspapers using Kenneth Marks The Ancestor Hunt website at  -
https://theancestorhunt.com/newspapers.html

4)  Tell us in your own blog post, in a comment to this blog post, or on Facebook.  Be sure to leave a comment with a link to your blog post on this post.

Here's mine:

My birth date is 23 October 1943 in National City, California (a San Diego suburb).

I knew that GenealogyBank had San Diego newspapers for that time period, so I searched for page one of that edition of the San Diego Union newspaper and easily found it:

The top headlines are:

*  Jap Subs Reported Off Coast; Planes Destroy Jungle Defenses
*  Trainmen Turn Back Strike
*  Tax Structure Streamlined by House Group
*  Capitalist Dies in L.A. Hotel
*  Russians Slay 1500 Germans at Melitopol

And below the image above:

*  Super Flat Tops Loom
*  Americans Gain Four Miles In Push to Join Eighth Army
*  Berlin Charges Kidnapping Plot
*  Big Allied Convoy in Mediterranean
*  etc.

The page 1 news articles were half war related and half everything else - local, national and world.

There was a lot more news on page 1 in 1943 than there is in 2021!

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, provides this list to me from a program he wrote that compares the current FamilySearch record collections list to the previous week's list.

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

MyHeritage Improves their Online Family Tree

 Here is more information from Daniel Horowitz of MyHeritage:

=============================================

I’m pleased to announce that the most popular view for family trees on MyHeritage has been improved with a new design — making it easier than ever to navigate your family tree and make new discoveries.

It’s easy to get absorbed in family history research, and spend hours on the family tree. The new tree design, which is cleaner and more modern, helps improve the overall user experience and make discovering your family history easier and more enjoyable. We have added useful new features, and some nice touches.

The improvements also include a new Relationship diagram that enables you to visualize your relationship to other people in the family tree to easily understand how you are related.

Other enhancements include a revamped side panel with one-click buttons to view the Relationship diagram, view Smart Matches™, Record Matches, or DNA Matches for a person. You’ll also see if MyHeritage identified any inconsistencies in your tree. In addition, we’ve added more options that enable you to customize the display of your family tree.

Watch this video for a brief overview of what’s new, and read the blog post for the full details about the improvements to the online family tree.

Disclosure: I receive a complimentary subscription to MyHeritage, and gave received other material consideration in past years. I uploaded my autosomal DNA raw data to their DNA product. This does not affect my objective analysis of MyHeritage products.

Seavers in the News - Milo Seaver Dies in Waverly, New York in 1957

   It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Press & Sun-Bulletin [Binghamton, N.Y.] newspaper dated 16 November 1957:

This obituary provides the name, death date and place, spouse's name, siblings names and children names, plus limited information about his associations.

Milo G. Seaver (1904-1957) was born on 26 September 1904 in Allegany County, New York, the son of son of Jesse Bradley and Edna Phoebe (Brown) Seaver.  He married Mildred L. Holland (1908-1980) on 31 December 1925 in Binghamton, New York.  They had 10 children:

*   Harriet A. Seaver (1926-????), married 1948 James N. Keene (1926-1997).
*  Christine E. Seaver (1928-2020), married 1946 Herbert William Bogert (1924-????).
*  Donald D. Seaver (130-2015), married Evelyn Belle Burns (1931-2015).
*  Genevieve May Seaver (1931-1972) married William H. Farnham (1930-2014).
*  Virginia Seaver (1934-????), married 1954 Howard J. Miller (1932-2014).

*  Phyllis Seaver (1940-????) married George Francis Clark (1939-????).
*  Mary Ann Seaver (1941-1942)
*  Sharon Seaver (1943?-????).

I am a 6th cousin two times removed to Milo G. Seaver.  Our common Seaver ancestor is my 7th great-grandfather Joseph Seaver (1672-1754) of Framingham, Massachusetts.

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has many children. I am glad that I can honor Milo G. Seaver today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.

 It's Treasure Chest Thursday - a chance to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the 1668 Birth entry for Edward Harington in the Watertown, Massachusetts Bay Colony town record book:

The marriage entry is  the 13th from the top and 14th from the bottom of the left-hand page:

The transcription of this record is:

"Edward Harington son of Robert & Susan Born the 2'd of March"

The source citation for this record is:

"Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988," indexed database and digital image, Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestry.com), Watertown, Births, Marriages and Deaths, page 62 (image 151 of 3991), Edward Harington birth entry, 2 March 1668/9.

This is an entry in a digitized handwritten Watertown town record book.  It is an Original Source with Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the birth of Edward Harington to Robert and Susan Harington on 2 March 1668/9.

Edward Harrington married Mary Ockington (1669-1725) in 1692 in Watertown, Massachusetts Bay Colony.  They had nine children between 1693 and 1711, all recorded in Watertown.

Edward and Mary (Ockington) Harrington  are my 7th great-grandparents, through their daughter Mary Harrington (1693-1774) who married  Joseph Grout (1683-1758) in 1717.
