MyHeritage Introduces GAIA, a Groundbreaking AI Agent for Genealogical Research

 I received this press release from Daniel Horowtiz of MyHeritage today:

==============================

MyHeritage Introduces GAIA, a Groundbreaking AI Agent for Genealogical Research

GAIA (Genealogy AI Agent) plans and conducts research, searches billions of historical records on MyHeritage and external online sources, and presents evidence-backed findings to help users achieve breakthroughs in their research

TEL AVIV, Israel and LEHI, Utah, [DATE] — MyHeritage, the leading global platform for family history, announced today the launch of GAIA, its Genealogy AI Agent. GAIA is a groundbreaking interactive AI research system that carefully maps out and conducts complex genealogical research guided by the user. Unlike conventional search tools or AI chatbots that simply return one-off answers or suggest where to look, GAIA actively carries out multiple research tasks, determines which leads to pursue, and evaluates evidence as the investigation progresses. Users describe to GAIA what they want to discover in conversational language, whether it’s tracing an elusive ancestor, locating a historical record, or solving a family mystery. GAIA then takes on much of the research, saving hours of work.

GAIA's capabilities are powered by multiple specialized AI agents that work together behind the scenes, searching MyHeritage's billions of historical records as well as publicly available sources across the web, and cross-referencing their findings. Developed to follow genealogical research best practices, GAIA distinguishes documented evidence from unverified clues, highlights uncertainties, and presents discoveries with supporting sources and suggestions for further research. It also integrates directly with MyHeritage family trees, allowing users to compare new discoveries with existing information, review the supporting evidence, and select which findings to save directly to their trees, all within GAIA. No changes are made without the user’s explicit approval.

“Agentic AI is opening up extraordinary new capabilities for genealogical research,” said Gilad Japhet, Founder and CEO of MyHeritage. “With GAIA, our vision is to harness this revolutionary technology to bring the capabilities of a professional genealogist to people researching their family history, while keeping them actively involved in the process. We see tremendous potential to expand GAIA’s capabilities soon into many other areas of family history research and discovery, including genetic genealogy.”

Early users have praised GAIA’s ability to accelerate research and uncover information they might otherwise have missed or that has challenged them for years. “I was impressed by the questions it asked to advance the research. Its conclusions were consistent and well-grounded. GAIA provided details on children that were absent from my own files,” said James Tanner, author of the Genealogy’s Star blog. Tina LaFreniere, founder of RelatedFaces.com, was similarly enthusiastic: “With its natural, conversational style, GAIA is an extraordinary new tool poised to become an indispensable research companion for genealogists.” Genealogist David Wilson wrote: “GAIA has totally changed the game… It often found records I never would have thought to search for. I can’t imagine working without GAIA anymore.”

GAIA is available on the MyHeritage website on desktop and mobile browsers. It is currently available in English, and support in additional languages will be added soon. MyHeritage subscribers can try GAIA at no additional cost, with extended usage available through a dedicated subscription plan. To try GAIA, visit myheritage.com/research and select the Research Agent tab.

GAIA was developed with MyHeritage’s strong commitment to user privacy. Before using GAIA, users must consent to the processing of information they provide by external AI services, and information shared during GAIA research is never used to train AI models.

Many more details are available on the MyHeritage blog post --  https://blog.myheritage.com/2026/11/introducing-gaia-myheritages-groundbreaking-genealogy-ai-agent/.

I was one of the beta-testers of GAIA and submitted many comments about the product to MyHeritage over the past three months. In general, I think this feature is a significant improvement to genealogy research techniques, but users need to be aware of its limitations.  You can access it at https://www.myheritage.com/research/ai-research.

The very best part of GAIA is the ability to discuss and explore genealogy research on specific persons in an extended Artificial Intelligence conversation.  It can access a user's MyHeritage family tree, freely accessible genealogy record collections, and can access the Internet websites that do not have a subscription or login firewall.

Usage of GAIA is limited without a MyHeritage OmniAI or OmniAI+ subscription.  The MyHeritage blog post describes the usage limitations.  It does not indicate when usage can resume after the user's allowance is depleted (FYI, I'm presently at 79% after ten discussions).

 I will share some of my discussions with GAIA in future weeks, probably writing one blog post a week in the next month or two as I explore the many facets of the feature.

Disclosure: I receive a complimentary PremiumPlus subscription to MyHeritage, and have received other material consideration in past years. I uploaded my autosomal DNA raw data to their DNA product. This does not affect my objective analysis of MyHeritage products. I am a paid subscriber to Family Tree Webinars and love it.
