Carringers in the News - W.E. Carringer Dies in 1926 in Urbana, Illinois

 It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Herald and Review [Decatur, Ill.]  newspaper dated 27 August 1926:

"EX-PESOTUM MAN IS DEAD

W.E. Carringer Succumbs In His Home in Urbana

"PESOTUM, Aug. 27 -- W.E. Carringer of Urbana died at his home there Friday afternoon at 4:15 o'clock, following an extended illness of pernicious anemia.

"Mr. Carringer was born July 4, 1860, at Biggsville, O.  He was married to Huldah Jane Crawford at Pesotum, Dec. 30, 1884.  They resided in Pesotum until the fall of 1909, then moving to Urbana, where they lived until his death.

"He is survived by his widow and four brothers, Harry M., Gary, Ind.; Col. Charles H. Carringer, of Waco, Tex.; Frank E. and Fred W. Carringer, of Denver, Col.  His parents, one sister and infant son preceded Mr. Carringer in death.  Short funeral services were held in the home Sunday afternoon after which the body was taken to Pesotum at the Methodist church, where services were held with Rev. Mr. Augustus and Rev. Mr. Madden officiating.  Burial was in the Pesotum cemetery."

W.E. Carringer died 20 August 1926 in Urbana, Champiagn County, Illinois.  The Monday obituary says Friday (meaning 24 August), but the Find A Grave memorial says 20 August.  The obituary lists his birth date and place (although there is a Biggsville, Illinois, but not Ohio), his wife's maiden name and their marriage date and place, plus the names of his four living brothers.  There is no indication of occupations, associations or interests.  Pesotum is about 8 miles south of Champaign, Illinois. 

William Effinger Carringer (1860-1926) was born 4 July 1860 in Biggsville, Henderson County, Illinois, the son of Anthony S. and Maria (Moyer) Carringer  He married Huldah Jane Crawford on 30 December 1884 in Urbana, Champaign county, Illinois.  They had no children, except for the infant son who died, whose name is unknown. 

I am a second cousin twice removed to  William Effinger Carringer.  Our common ancestors are my 3rd great-grandparents Daniel Spangler (1781-1851) and Elizabeth King (1796-1863) and 4th great-grandparents Martin Carringer (1758-1835) and Maria Magdalena Hoax (1768-1851). 

There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person lives and dies in a rural area and has no living children.  I am glad that I can honor William Effinger Carringer today.
