Genealogy Pot-Pourri - Week Ending 22 November 2021

Here are the highlights of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week.

1) Hosted and moderated the Chula Vista Genealogical Society DNA Interest Group Meeting on Wednesday on Zoom with 27 in attendance.  I reported on DNA Kit specials for Thanksgiving and Christmas on AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, 23andMe and FamilyTreeDNA, and mentioned the New Yorker article about CeCe Moore and forensic genetic genealogy.   I also reviewed my "Disproving an AncestryDNA ThruLine" blog post, and presented a short PowerPoint on "Finding Evidence to Support an Adoption Case Using DNA" with my Devier J. Smith adoption.

2)  Attended the Whittier Area Genealogical Society (WAGS) Program Meeting on Saturday on Zoom, with Jean Wilcox Hibben presenting information about Epidemics and Pandemics in world history.

3) Participated in today's Mondays With Myrt Zoom webinar. We discussed migration paths, including my Saturday Night Genealogy Fun blog post with migration maps of my Seaver and Carringer ancestors.  The panel and audience chimed in with their knowledge and experience too.  Further discussion was about Mormon pioneers, MyHeritageDNA labels and strategy, Liv's blog post about Norway and Russia ties, Frank's blog post about finding new information in German records, Pat's finding a German record on FamilySearch, and then a lightning round.

6)  Found, downloaded and renamed 8 Massachusetts land deeds of my 6th great-grandfather Robert Sever (1702-1752) on FamilySearch.

7) AncestryDNA added 27 new DNA matches this past week, with no new ThruLines, and MyHeritage added 21 new DNA matches. Reviewed the new DNA matches on AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, FamilyTreeDNA and 23andMe. Added Notes to 4  AncestryDNA matches with cM values, relationships and known shared ancestors.

8)  There were several sessions working in the RootsMagic software program to match with and update FamilySearch Family Tree profiles for Seaver families and my ancestral families, with occasional additions to the RootsMagic profiles. I have matched 46,015 of my RootsMagic persons with FamilySearch Family Tree profiles (up 187).

9) Used Web Hints and Record Matches from Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast and FamilySearch to add content and source citations to my RootsMagic profiles. I now have 67,387 persons in my RootsMagic file (up 210 from last week), and 143,421 source citations (up 62). I TreeShared 310 new or modified profiles with my Ancestry Member Tree, and I resolved 728 Ancestry Hints. My new Ancestry Member Tree has Ancestry Record Hints with 22,999 to be resolved, but I work on them almost daily.

10) Wrote 17 Genea-Musings blog posts the past week, of which three were a press release. The most viewed post the past week was
Dear Randy:  Should I Use FamilySearch Family Tree as My Main Genealogy Database? with over 470 views.

11) I am still fine here at the Genea-cave, hunkered down and not going out much after Week 88 of COVID-19 isolation. Linda is at a memory care and skilled nursing facility in Chula Vista 7 miles from home and I visit her for an hour every day - we play Uno and she wins about half the time.  The Aztecs won and the Chargers won their games.  I went to the grocery store on Monday and Friday. Other than that, it was stay-at-home on the computer doing (mainly) genealogy, plus eating, sleeping, laundry, cleaning, cooking, watching TV news and sports, reading books, napping, and a little yard work.
