Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Major News Events During Your Life

It's Saturday Night -

Time for more Genealogy Fun!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible! music) is to:

1) What are the major news events that happened during your life that you remember where you were when you heard about them?

2) Tell us in your own blog post, or in comments to this post, or in comments on Facebook.  As always, please leave a link to your work in Comments.

Here is mine:

I have several " big ones:"

*  The John F. Kennedy assassination on 22 November 1963 in Dallas.  I was in the cafeteria on the San Diego State campus eating lunch.  They made an announcement over the intercom.  Everybody left.  I t took me awhile to get the bus and go home - two transfers.  When I got home my father (who was anti-Kennedy) said "This a terrible thing, Randy."  We watched TV all weekend.  Then the conspiracy theories started and I have always been interested in the story.

*  The Bobby Kennedy assassination in June 1968 in Los Angeles.  I was new to my group of engineers at Rohr, and had gone to see Bobby in an open area near the plant the day (or week?) before.  One of the engineers had a poker party on election night, and I went.  When we heard about this, we went home and watched TV.  No mystery here!

*  The first moon landing with astronauts on 20 July 1969.  The landing was in the early afternoon, and we listened on the radio at work.  The moonwalk was in the evening, so I watched it with my parents live.  It was an amazing technological feat all through the 1960s and early 1970s.

*  The Pacific Southwest Airlines 182 crash on 25 September 1978 over San Diego.  I was at work, and my mother phoned me to say that the plane had crashed in North Park.  She could see the smoke from her home in Point Loma.  I went home to my family after work and watched TV for several days as they figured it out.

*  The Challenger Space Shuttle explosion over Florida on 28 January 1986 occurred in the daytime.  I was at work, and everyone was interested in hearing the shuttle had gone into space.  We had the television on in a conference room, and watched in horror when they said it had exploded.  Rohr made the solid rocket booster casing that housed the faulty O-rings.

*  11 September 2001.  9/11.  I was still in bed when the first aircraft hit the World Trade Tower at around 5:45 a.m.  I had the alarm set to turn the radio on at 6 a.m. and it came on with the news.  I watched TV until the second tower fell, then went to work and that's all they talked about.  We had project engineers on a business trip in Baltimore who drove their rental car across the country in three days because there was no air traffic.  We kept track of where they were.

That's enough for now!

My friend, Marshall, has come up with a program to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED.  Thanks to Marshall for helping us out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to  https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link).  It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

New Records Available To Search This Findmypast Friday, 24 July 2020

I received this information from Findmypast today:

=================================================

RARE NEW RECORDS AVAILABLE TO SEARCH THIS FINDMYPAST FRIDAY
  • New records from both sides of the Atlantic added to Findmypast’s growing collections
  • Includes the oldest newspaper published on the site to date, stretching coverage back the 17th century
  • Also includes a rare collection of social history records - rediscovered by the Coventry FHS after being lost for nearly 100 years
An eclectic mix of records from both sides of the Atlantic are available to search this Findmypast Friday, including;

Warwickshire, Coventry Pawnbroker Tickets 1915-1923

“Lost” for nearly 100 years and rediscovered during demolition work at 118 Gosford Street, Coventry, in 2015, this fascinating slice of social history was salvaged and lovingly transcribed by the Coventry Family History Society.

The tickets provide a remarkable insight into pawn broking during and immediately after the First World War, revealing the items people pawned, where they lived, how much they received and how often they received loans. Dating from the 24 April 1915 until the 3 October 1923, the tickets cover items that were pawned at Wm. Brookes at 1-2 Silver Street and 118 Gosford Street and Philips Electric Arc Welding Ltd.

They reveal how these shops were overwhelmingly used by women, often pawning items on a Monday to help them get through the week, before retrieving them on a Friday or Saturday when their husbands got paid. The most likely value put on items was around six to five shillings with the most valuable items being priced at 25 shillings. Common items included bedlinen, shoes, dresses, costumes, coats and jackets, tablecloths and even underwear, revealing the daily struggles faced by many during this difficult time.

The large number of tickets issued on Christmas Eve 1915 also serve as a powerful reminder of the impact of the Great War and the thousands of women who were left to fend for their families alone.

Warwickshire Burials

Pinpoint your Warwickshire relatives’ final resting places with over 140,000 additional records from three cemeteries to discover when and where your ancestors were buried, their parent’s names, their dates and birth and death and home address.

Records from the following cemeteries have been added in this update:

  • Coventry, London Road Cemetery, 1916-2007
  • Coventry, St Paul's Cemetery, 1893-1994
  • Walsgrave on Sowe Cemetery, 1893-1994.

United States, Idaho, Reconstructed 1890 Idaho Census

The 1890 US Census was destroyed by fire. This substitute index can help plug the gaps for the state of Idaho. Created by volunteers and staff from Idaho State Archives, the records can reveal important family details like names, dates and locations.

Consisting of federal, state and local government records, the collection pinpoints as many Idaho residents as possible between 1885 and 1894.

Newspapers

This week’s update includes the addition of the Edinburgh Gazette, the oldest title published on Findmypast to date, stretching Findmypast’s newspaper holdings back into the 17th century.

First published eight years before the Act of Union on 2 March 1699 by Her Majesty’s Stationary Office, the Gazette’s consisted of legal and official announcements from HM Government, the Scottish Executive, the Parliaments at Westminster and Holyrood, the Armed Forces, local authorities, churches, companies and private citizens.

It featured articles relating to state matters, parliamentary affairs, planning, and even transport, with Local Authority notices relating to road and footpath closures, as well as regularly printed notices of bankruptcies, the appointment of liquidators and meetings of creditors.

Other new titles available to search this week include;

  • Cork Daily Herald covering 1858-1860, 1863, 1865-1867, 1872-1894
  •  Bangalore Spectator covering 1877, 1880, 1882-1883
  • Edinburgh Gazette covering 1699
  • Cavan Weekly News and General Advertiser covering 1864-1868, 1870-1880, 1882-1887, 1890-1892, 1894-1896
  • Ballinrobe Chronicle and Mayo Advertiser covering 1866-1872, 1875-1877, 1879, 1882-1884, 1886-1889, 1892-1896
  • Nantwich Chronicle covering 1945-1958, 1976, 1978
While additional coverage has been added to;
  • Leicester Chronicle from 1915, 1925, 1929-1933, 1948, 1950-1959, 1965, 1975 and 1977
  • Jersey Evening Post from 1901 and 1904

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

 William S. Tilden edited the book History of the Town of Medfield, Massachusetts, 1650-1886.  The family genealogy section of the book provides this summary[1]:
"Joseph Clark was a cordwainer by trade.  He married in 1686 Mary Wight, and settled about the same time in the north part of the town, very near where Noah Allen now lives.  In 1695, he held the office of sealer of leather.  At his father's death, he received the homestead in the south part of the town, and removed thither.  Captain Joseph Clark was one of the prominent men of the town, built the grist mill, and carried on the manufacture of malt in an adjacent building.  His wife died in 1705; and he married in 1706 Abigail Smith, widow of Samuel.  He died in 1731, his wife about 1750."
Joseph Clarke was born 14 June 1664 in Medfield, Massachusetts, the first child of Joseph and Mary (Allen) Clark[1,6,8].

He married, first, Mary Wight (1667-1705) on 8 April 1686 in Medfield[1-2].  She was the daughter of Thomas and Mehitable (Cheney) Wight of Medfield.

They had seven children, all born and recorded in the Medfield town records.  They were:

* Mary Clark (1687-1717), married 1705 Nathaniel Smith (1684-1762).
*  Mehitable Clark (1690-1765), married 1715 Timothy Morse (1687-1765).
*  Hannah Clark (1692-1773), married 1709 John Robbins (1688-1774).
*  Esther Clark (1695-1774), married 1715 Ebenezer Turner (1693-1759).
*  Joseph Clark (1697-1731), married 1718 Experience Wheeler (1697-1754).
*  Hephzibah Clark (1699-1791), married 1727 Timothy Hamant (1699-1774).
*  Thomas Clark (1703-1776), married 1727 Abigail Morse (1696-1777).

Mary (Wight) Clark died on 16 December 1705 in Medfield at age 38, leaving seven children between the ages of 2 and 18.

Joseph married (2) Abigail (Turner) Smith (1667-1750), the widow of Samuel Smith of Medfield, on 23 December 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts[1,4].  They had one child, born and recorded in Medfield:

*  Abigail Clark (1711-1747), married 1730 Henry Smith (1711-1785).

Joseph's mother, Mary (Allen) Clark (1641-1702) died on 5 May 1702 in Medfield at age 60, and his father, Joseph Clark (1642-1702) died on 4 September 1702 at age 60.  Joseph was named administrator of his father's estate[3].  He received a double portion of the estate in December 1704 when the real estate was divided by a committee.  He received (all in Medfield, except where indicated) the following real estate:

Joseph Clark died 13 July 1731 in Medfield at age 67, leaving a widow, Abigail (Turner) (Smith) Clark and 6 surviving children[5-6].  There is a Find A Grave memorial for Joseph Clark, but no record or stone in Vine Lake Cemetery in Medfield[6].
