Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- A Photo of You With a Grandparent

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

It's Saturday Night again -

Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment, should you decide to accept it (you ARE reading this, so I assume that you really want to play along - cue the Mission Impossible music!):

1)   Do you have a photograph of yourself with one or more of your grandparents?  How about your great-grandparents?  Show us what you have, and tell us your grandparents names.

2)  Write your own blog post, or leave a comment on this post, or write something on Facebook.

Here's mine:

1)  I have many photographs of myself with my maternal grandparents, Lyle Lawrence and Emily (Auble) Carringer.  Here is one of my favorites:

This is Linda and Randy's wedding on 21 March 1970.  This photograph has Linda's maternal grandmother in it also -- Edna (McKnew) Schaffner was 85 years old.  My grandmother, Emily Kemp (Auble) Carringer was 70 years old, and my grandfather, Lyle Lawrence Carringer, was 78 years old.  I think that this is the only wedding of their grandchildren that they attended.  I wonder what they are thinking in this photograph?  Perhaps my grandmother was thinking "I changed his diaper for years, and look at him now!"  I loved them dearly.

2)  I have only one photograph of me with my paternal grandparents.  My grandfather, Frederick Walton Seaver (1876-1942) died before I was born.  My maternal grandmother, alma Bessie (Richmond) Seaver (1882-1962) came to San Diego in 1958 for a visit with our family, along with my father's sister Evelyn, her husband Walter Wood, and their granddaughter Diana Soule.  This is one of the only photographs I have that shows me with my grandmother:

My grandmother is the second from the right, and I am next to her in the red collared shirt.  My only real memory of her is that she spoke with a classical New England accent.

3)  The only photograph of me with a great-grandparent is this one - I took a screen shot from one of the Carringer home movies of my first birthday in October 1944 and captured this photograph of me with my great-grandfather, Henry Austin Carringer (1853-1946):

This is the only photograph I have of my great-grandfather smiling and laughing.  He was age 90 in this photograph.  I wish my movie had his voice also - I would love to know what he's saying and/or thinking!  Do you think he had any idea that 79 years later that I would be showing this photograph to hundreds of people on my blog?

=======================================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Findmypast Friday

Remember all of your wartime ancestors this weekend with millions of new records

Britain, First World War Campaign Medals

Over 6.5 million new records have been added to Findmypast this week, in the form of this brand-new collection. It contains the names of men and women who were awarded campaign medals during the First World War. You’ll typically find their name, rank, regiment or unit, medals awarded, theatre of war, and any additional notes.

Cheshire, Macclesfield WW1 Hospital Records

This second new collection includes 1,880 hospital records from Macclesfield in Cheshire, covering the years 1914 to 1918. The transcripts include a name, birth year, event date, place, and details such as rank, service number, regiment and unit or corps, plus an admission and discharge date.

Crimean War Casualties

Rounding off the trio of new military records is an update to Crimean War Casualties for 1853-1856. The 5,893 new records can include a name, date, soldier number, rank, regiment, in addition to a description of the casualty and the action it was caused by.
